Huiña-pukios Profile

The main purpose of our organization is to diffuse the flora and native fauna in Chile, pointing most directly to the local level in communities and more specific geographical zones because of their high degree in endemism and high antropic impact. Our organization was created because of the necessity to know the reality of the chilenan problems in the biological conservation. On that matter, Huina-Pukios became an organization on November 15th 1999. As we wrote before, our main purpose is to inform about the biodiversity and environmental problems in Chile. By this time, our organization has a great number of associates, voluntary and volunteer people in the different professions.

That it means Huiña-pukios

Huiña-pukios it is created as a to fusion between two languages that are spoken between two of the originating peoples that inhabit our territory. "Huiña", it is a mapundungun language (mapuche), with the one which designate to "Oncifelis guigna", the cat winks, specie of feline common in the temperate forests of the center and south of Chile. The "pukios" word, takes issue with the "puquios" (in quéchua language), or sources of natural water, as designated thereinafter the Spanish conquerors to the freshwater that were finding in the north zone and altiplanic zone of Chile and South America. This word, it is conserved as a relict language in some areas of the central zone of Chile, where during the time of the commissions (between 1600-1700), is they were brought indigenous to work in the central zone, obligated by the weight of the weapons. Thus, pukios that it is the Aymara denomination to designate to the natural water and huiña the wild cat, was born of the fusion of both concepts. A feline wild drinking of mountan chair waters, in the language of the two of the most important etnias in Chile.
