From 1959 and through most of the sixties Phyllis Gotlieb was the only Canadian getting her work published. She was born in Toronto in 1926. 

Phyllis' first novel Sunburst was very well received. Her Starcats series was also very popular. The first in the series, A Judgment of Dragons, won the Aurora Award in 1982 and the third, The Kingdom of the Cats was nominated for one in 1986. The other book in the series is called Emperor, Swords, Pentacles. Phyllis was poetry editor for Transversions from 1995-2000. Her novel, Violent Stars, was released in May 99. Her latest novel is called Mindworlds.

John is one of the Jurors for the first Sunburst Award which will be presented for works of Fantastic Literature published in the year 2000.
