PBL firms up role as stepping stone to PBA
Everything is upbeat in the Philippine Basketball League these days, and it is easy to understand why. Several encouraging developments over the past few weeks had things slowly falling into place in an energetic build up that is expected to firm up the PBL's stature as the premier amateur commercial league in the land. Today alone, the PBL leadership will undertaken three major moves that should boost the league's resurgence, starting with the signing of a memorandum of agreement with Silverstar for the broadcast rights on the games.

Silverstar Communications won over several other bidders for the rights to carry the games on television with a proposal that will have the PBL matches being beamed live nationwide over PTV-Channel three times a week. Under the one-year agreement with silverstar, games on weekdays will be carried live from 6 to 10 p.m. over Channel 4 while Saturday matches will be shown from 3:30 to 8 p.m., with a news program to be inserted in between.

"Our games will not only be beamed live on a prime slot in all our playdates, but silverstar also bowed to upgrade the production side of the broadcast so it's green and go," said new PBL Commissioner Yeng Guiao. Also today, the PBL's board of governors and officials will host mediamen in a fellowship gathering at the Century Park Sheraton Hotel which will likewise serve as the launching pad of the league's new logo and slogan. League officials are mum on the blueprints, except to say that the new logo and slogan will, fittingly enough, highlight the PBL's distinction as the breeding ground of the country's brightest basketball stars.

Kicking off the busy in its preparations for the coming season will be tackled. This early, Guiao said he will present to the board a number of concepts he hopes to put in place next year, among them plans to hold tournaments for juniors and women players simultaneously with the league games.
