Mobiline outlasts Shell in overtime

MOBILINE CENTER Andrew Seigle holds on firmly to the ball after snaring the rebound as Shell's Ronnie Magsanoc waits for an opportunity during the second quarter of their PBA All-Filipino Cup game at the Astrodome. (Bob DUNGO Jr.)

It took veteran Glen Capacio and Fil-American rookie Andy Seigle to punch out a hole big enough for Mobiline to wriggle past Formula Shell, 107-102, in overtime last night in the PBA All-Filipino Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Seigle tossed back a couple of missed attempts by his teammates while Capacio had a block, a steal, two rebounds and four points in the final 77 seconds to lift the Cellulars to their second straight win following an opening-day loss.

It was the first time since the 1996 Second Conference that Mobiline scored back-to-back wins and in overtime since Feb. 21, 1995.

The Turbochargers, on the other hand, took their worst three-game All-Filipino start at 1-2 since Chito Narvasa became coach in 1995. This was also their third straight overtime loss in two years.

"It was purely hustle that won the game for us. Those follow-ups, rebounds and steals were the main factors for this win," said coach Norman Black.

Ronnie Magsanoc had tied the game for the last time at 99-all with a triple before Seigle succeeded where Franz Pumaren and Lowell Briones failed - bring the lead back to Mobiline.

Shell closed in at 100-101 with a technical free throw off an illegal defense called against Seigle but sophomore Rommel Santos missed in the ensuing play with Capacio collaring the rebound. Seigle then made it a three-point lead on a putback off an Eric Reyes boner, time down to 27.8 ticks.

Then Capacio took charge, snatching the ball off Santos who in turn sent the former to the stripes for 105-100. Magsanoc flubbed a three-pointer and again Capacio was there for the rebound plus a foul off Santos. He went on to seal the win with two more freebies.

The Cellulars could have won the match easily in regulation when they went up, 92-84, behind Briones and Capacio in the 1:44-minute mark. But Shell charged back and Benjie Paras, whose two consecutive baskets pegged the score at 92-all, forced the extension by swatting away a Briones layup in the closing seconds.

Seigle, playing his best game so far in the young tournament, had 27 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals and the same number of blocks. Briones added 19 while Capacio and Alvin Teng each had 15.

"He (Seigle) is just getting there," said Black. "The media has been hard on him since the off-season but I tell you he has been productive."
