Another Recall of cheese

On November 7, 2000 word was released of a voluntary recall of cheeses from  Schreiber Foods, Inc..  Specific cheese types affected are some of the Colby names, as well as some Mexican Blend cheese.  It is believed that these cheeses may be contaminated by the listeria bacteria.

The recall was announced after the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture had tested some of the cheese, and not as a result of any complaints of illness.  Expiration dates on the cheeses ranges from  November 14, 2000 to June 20, 2001. Twenty-two different brand names are affected and include some packaged in chunks, cube, longhorn, loaf and shredded styles.  The complete list of those types affected is available by calling 1-800-637-8259 or by checking the website:  www.pressevent.com/cheese/recall.htm.

The listeria bacteria, according to experts from the Mayo Clinic, is a potentially deadly bacteria, whose full name is Listeria Monocytogenes.  It is hardier than a lot of other bacteria.  For example, most other bacteria will stop growing at 40 degrees F, while listeria will not stop growing until the temperature reaches
0 degrees F. Even heat does not affect listeria as easily as it does other bacteria.

Listeria is found almost anywhere, and does not change the taste or smell of food it contaminates.  Listeria has also been found in some animals, including some birds and fish. Listeriosis is the illness that is associated with the bacteria.  This is a flu-like illness with fever and chills. Other symptoms may be present, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, severe headache and others.

Unfortunately, Listeriosis doesn't show up  the day following consumption.  In fact, it may take up to 6 weeks to show up, at which time you'd probably think it was a virus. Other more problematic symptoms can occur with this bacteria.  Serious complications such as Bacterial Meningitis can occur. This is a medical emergency that could cause permanent neurological damage with problems like hearing loss, seizures, retardation and loss of vision.

It is believed that about 20 % of people who are infected and develop Listeriosis, die from it.  You should also be aware that certain groups of individuals are more at risk than others.  These groups include pregnant women, newborns, people with weak immune systems, and those over 60 years of age.
