Financial aid
Payment plans
To make the Biological Field School more accessible to students we have chosen not to be accredited by the Ministry of Colleges, Universities and Training. This means that although we are still approved by the Ministry we are exempt from registration and enjoy the same privilages as an accredited school. Thusly, we have our own financial aid programs and are more flexible to accommodate student needs. Subsequently, EARTHQUEST does offer financial aid to help pay for programs and courses for those who qualify. These may be in the form of grants, loans, installment payments or paying for loans from internship/job wages.
Please consider the following options when thinking about how to pay for your program, course or project costs;
Option 1 - Loans and grants
You may qualify for financial aid in the form of a loan or grant. To obtain a financial aid application form simply download the attached file and email to us with your application along with a $25.00 CAD processing fee. Please allow 7 - 10 days for processing.

If approved for financial aid then a payment/program plan structure will be established for your file whereby you will be sent an agreement form detailing the payment plan for any loans toward your education and training. Any approved grants will be applied to the cost of your program.
Option 2 - Building up your course/program workload profile
If you do not have the funds or time to invest in the intensive 3 to 12 month FAT Program at our Biological Field School, you may elect to obtain the necessary field skills needed to apply to jobs by taking individual courses. The prerequisite to all Level 1 FA, teaching, management/leadership and internship opportunities is the Level 1 General FASST Course. This course takes 6 - 8 weeks to complete on your own timeframe. Upon successful completion of this course you may elect to take an AFASST Course or Level 2 FAT Course. This is a slower way to achieve your full Level 1 FA status, but many people choose this method of advancement.
Option 3 - Installment payments
Again, if you do not have the funds to pay for some of our courses, projects and programs you may request to pay in smaller installments. We would like to make your life easier - so simply contact us to inquire for more details.
Option 4 - Internship or job wages
If you are approved, meet the FAT Program critieria, and invited to an internship/job opportunity then you may pay for your program, course, training through wages earned while on the job. For example, if you are approved for a Bruce Trail Project internship through EARTHQUEST (Canada) you may receive the skill training which is equivalent to courses offered through our Biological Field School. This means that you may be selected to do a paid internship or apprenticeship program. Course/program fees may be paid for while on these internships. Internships may last 2 - 12 months, but paid internships are limited and subject to the same scrutiny as applying to a regular job. Please apply in advance as we can only select 2 participants per year for this option.
Option 5 - Biological Field School Financing
If you meet the following criteria;
under the age of 30 and Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
graduate of a post secondary institution (i.e. College, University, Technical school)
eligible for full-time employment (i.e. not returning to school,
unemployed or underemployed - i.e. working part-time, on a short contract – less than 6 months, working outside of your field of study)
not previously participated in a Federal youth employment/education program (previous participants of summer employment programs are still eligible)
be employed with the employer
not be a family member of the organization’s directors or senior officers
have the intention to obtain a permanent position in the environment industry
If applying for BEAHR, must be an Aboriginal person (Métis, Inuit, First Nation)
then you may qualify for financing to help defer the cost of your FAT training and courses + receive a wage for your internship or job. Please contact us for more details.
Option 6 - Full Tuition Financing
We may ask you to visit your local TD/Canada Trust since we have been approved to provide a Student Line of Credit for up to $8000.00 CAD at an annual interest rate of prime + 1.5%. If you have good credit and live near a major city in Canada you may qualify for a credit line to cover all tuition fees. The added value of this credit is that you may use it for other necessities such as a downpayment for a mortgage, renting a car to participate in field trips, etc. Simply call us to begin the application process, which may be done over the phone. Financing may be approved within 24 hours with 2 pieces of ID and a personal visit to our financing officer.
