Biological Field School
Internships

If you are encountering any difficulties with finding work in your field, despite academic credentials and some work experience and do not possess the required certification or qualifications to apply directly to EARTHQUEST positions then you may apply as a student of the Biological Field School for internships. Internships are the most effective way for EARTHQUEST to award students or those seeking qualifications for immediate employment with a position that utilizes the minimum criteria necessary to work in the environmental industry. Now, you can obtain certification and essential field skills needed to qualify for numerous jobs within a very short period of time because we have condensed the equivalent of 3 - 5 years experience into 4 - 6 week courses. Students who are awarded internships often use the knowledge and experiences gained as a springboard to gain successful full time employment with Conservation Authorities, the federal and provincial government, other field research and conservation organizations, school boards, etc.

How they work
If you possess 3 - 5 years of practical field experience, the ability to positively field identify 75% or more of the flora and fauna of the eastern half of North America and/or a FAT certificate then you may apply to internships posted on our job postings page or internally at the Biological Field School. These postings are available to all students enrolled in General FAT Program courses or suscribing to our job posting service for $20.00 CAD/year. If you do not have these skills then you may apply as a student to the Biological Field School. Please refer to;

Packages

Step #1; application

Submit a current copy of your resume and cover letter outlining how your knowledge and skills relate to the position applied.

Be sure to cover all statements of qualifications by citing at least 2 - 3 examples that demonstrate your knowledge and skills from your personal, professional or academic experiences
Your resume must chronologically follow your cover letter. Do not include anything that doesn't relate to the position applied. For example, stating that you worked as a cashier in a retail outlet will be counted as "narrow experience" and you will receive a lower rank than another candidate who does not state this.

Step #2; the interview

We may conduct a field identification assessment of your knowledge of flora and fauna and you must receive a grade of 75% to pass. This is done to determine employment readiness and/or how many certification courses you may need to gain a stronger foothold in the environmental industry to ensure that you obtain successful employment

If applying to an internship which requires Ecological Land Classification (ELC) certification you must have the ELC course or state a willingness to obtain the certification to apply. Applicants who lack certification or state a willingness to obtain it at their own expense are given higher priority for setting up interviews. For more information on this and other General FAT Program certification courses please refer to;

General FAT Courses

Step #3; Getting the internship

If chosen for an internship, which may or may not be directly attached to General FAT Program courses you will be contacted within 1 week of your status. If accepted then you'll be required to sign an agreement within 3 days and pay the $580.00 (effective Jan. 1st/07) non-refundable deposit + registration fee to secure placement within 24 hours to 7 days. Failure to sign an agreement within this timeframe or pay the registration will automatically forfeit your internship to the next available candidate. The length of the internship and terms of payment and employment are non-negotiable on the part of the applicant. Applicants attempting to do this will not be awarded an internship.

Candidates considering internships or jobs working on the Bruce Trail Project are strongly urged to purchase your copy of our new book on the flora and fauna of the Niagara Escarpment World Biosphere Reserve
$27.50 CAD + shipping and handling
