Being Gay in the UK
Section 28
Section 28 is a clause in the law that bans the promotion of homosexuality in schools across the UK.
Section 28 is supposed to be in place to protect children and society, but the only real thing that it does achieve is that it isolates gay children. Thus making them feel worse about their sexuality and therefore confusing them even futher. Section 28 is the legal eqivelant of saying that being homosexual is wrong and it's a disgrace. It doesn't give children the decision to decide if they think it is right or wrong and this is why society is so prejudice because it is a vicious cylce, which has to be broken.
The current Labour government realise that Section 28 needs to be axed, they have just put in a bid to abolish the law in the House of Lords but they lost the vote to a majority of about 40 votes in February 2000.
It has been said that section 28 enables bullying to go in schools. This can be the case as teachers aren't allowed to promote homosexuality so some don't know when or if to step in if a child is being bullied about their sexuality. The suicide rate for homosexual teenagers is much higher than of hetrosexual teenagers, and according to a survey by Stonewall 77% of gay and lesbian students are bullied. No body should have to put up with being bullied, tell somebody or challenge your teachers if you have the confidence. If not then organisation such as Mesmac North-east
and Childline are always there to help you. The labour government are in the process of reducing the legal age of gay sex to sixteen years of age. This signals that homosexuals are begining to be accepted in todays society.

Section 28 is morally wrong, it divides society and ones basic human rights. I can't believe that we live in a society in this day and age that refuses to accept homosexuality, it is disgraceful that such a law still exists. Section 28 is the equvilant of discrimination and prejudice to the gay communitity at its peak. The law HAS to be abolished.
