Newcastle Gay Pride

Gay Pride takes place in various cities around the Uk and around the world and it is a celebration on being gay and being proud of it. London celebrated its first Mardi Gras along side its annual gay pride on july 3rd 1999. The march saw over 25,000 people parade through the streets for the capitals gay and lesbian pride parade.

Many gay organisations and charities had put together special displays and had enlisted volunteers to perform as they paraded. There was a display entitled "Dancing for equality" which was a protest against Section 28 and the unequal age of concent which is now being made legal but the fight to abolish Section 28 still lives on.

The first london Mardi Gras was held in "Finsbury Park" and it was a huge success. All 65,000 tickets were sold for the event which boasted top acts such as Billie, Boy George and Steps in the main line-up. Culture secretery Chris Smith spoke out and said that he would do everything he could to ensure that Labour would bring in legislation for equality. Equality has now been granted and the bill is in the process of being passed by the House of Lords.
Newcastle was also host to the  gay pride celebration on July 18th 1999 at Northumbria University. Live entertainment was available throughout the day and refreshments were still being served untill the early hours of the Sunday morning. Newcastle will also be host to another gay pride celebration in July of 2000!
