Special Anniversary Issue
Our baby turns 1!
By: Iska

Like a mother whose child turns one year old, we are full of memories of a year that just went by. The experiences are so vivid that it feels like everything happened yesterday. The accomplishments are so small yet so special. We, at the publishing desk, feel the same way. Writing for our first anniversary issue gives me a special sense of pride. Higee, Ronald and I have survived a full year of staring at walls and hundreds of minutes on the phone to come up with ideas to write, not to mention late nights in front of the computer to beat a deadline (per my editor’s orders!). What I started on a whim has blossomed into a true medium. Nevertheless, we are proud that we have reached a milestone.

We are happy to have helped rekindle old friendships and formed new ones. Although at times we may have run out of intelligent issues to write, we managed to stay on track by updating our class list. If not for the literary excellence, I hope that we will be remembered as the team that insisted on finding Edwin de Guzman, Hegino Manaois and Amy Tiburcio. Hopefully by year end we will find Jojo Thiam, Armi Consolacion, Luisa Ronda, Gina Inobio and all the others. (You should read all the previous issues. You will see that begging does work!)

As child-rearing is a long term responsibility, we too are planning on staying around for a while. (Or shouldn’t we?) Our special thanks to all our contributors (and readers) without whom our efforts will be futile.

Reunion Update

We have said in last month’s issue, that a budget for the reunion was being discussed. We were informed that the estimated cost will be P100,000. Pub’s Note: Does this estimate include the costs for the medical mission? How is this estimate affected by the recent peso devaluation?

In order to raise the funds, the Committee decided to start rounding up alumni who will pledge at least $100.00 or P1,000,00, U.S. and P.I. residents, respectively. However, donations of any amount are highly encouraged and welcomed. The total amount of pledges/donations will then be deducted from the required amount. (Pub: A list of pledges will be published in our future issues)

This decision was reached in order to encourage attendance to a low-cost, if not free, reunion. The notion about reunions being expensive and for the well-to-dos should be dispelled.

Everyone involved in the planning of this reunion believes that the success of this affair depends not on where and what will be served but who and how many will be served. You and I are what will make this affair truly a reunion!

On the subject of the medical mission, Monchit has convinced some of her colleagues to assist her, Jeffrey and Willie during the medical mission. She requested for us to ask Jeffrey to contact her friend Dr. Angela Atchacoso-Bolinas at 928-8346 or 927-5684 or 929-2535 to coordinate the date and activities.

Halo-Halo Special

I read somewhere that the odds of having a baby girl rises in proportion to the woman’s age. Nevertheless, we’re still proud to announce that we, Ronald and Iska, are expecting a new baby girl (so says my doctor) in October.

And to prove the point, Amy Tiburcio has a seven-month old girl while Gerry and Naomi have a two-month old. Not to forget Maricel and Pablo’s Fiona, who is also two months old.

Furthermore, Rona reports that David and Marites Macato also have a 1 ½ year old daughter. They have been married for two years and he is currently a coordinator at Habitat for Humanity International, a non-profit organization that offers low cost housing to homeless and low income families. Their projects include communities in San Isidro, Saguday, Quirino and Balintocatoc.

The de Guzman’s baby is due to arrive this month. Good luck to Wennie and Edwin! (Wanna bet that it’s a girl too?)
Congratulations to newly weds, Flor Fernandez and Jun Vargas. They, too, are expecting their first baby.

Still on the baby news, Previ Fabros-Luis is also expecting her third baby.

A recently discovered singer in the batch, (Atty.??? Is he) Arcelio de Castillo, belted several songs at Monchit’s birthday bash!
Remember Hans Biltz? Well, he did gain some weight. At his birthday celebration last June 29, he introduced his latest business, Pancit Malabon by order. It comes with high recommendations (while it’s still free, I was told).
We have a respondent to an ad from a previous issue. Someone who’s interested in availing of the low cost housing offered by David Macato learned that the requirements include marriage and children. Unfortunately the natural insemination offer does not come with a marriage clause. It does, however, come with a satisfaction guarantee. he-he-he
Hegino Manaois has been found! Again, thanks to Rona. He also happens to be the first to pledge $100.00. (see related article)
Do not forget to browse through our class list. We have received a lot of updates; 21 name changes and 22 new listings about former classmates.
Rico Alvarez has also been located. True to his promise two years ago to help organize a reunion, he said that he will communicate with the Executive Committee. He further stated, that he can help coordinate the medical mission and he can be a liaison in Manila.
Through word of mouth, we were requested to send a message to Michael Andres. That is, ‘Ige wonders how you’re doing and he would like to hear from you.'
To all our new readers, LSS batch ‘82 is scheduled to have a reunion on December 29, 1997 in Santiago City. Hope to see you all!

PROFILE:
Ige & Family
Miguel "Ige" Agustin

Miguel Agustin, fondly called Ige, is appropriately featured in our column for this issue, without his encouragement to organize a reunion, we would not have started a newsletter. (and we will not have to write this anniversary issue)

In December, he was elected by our peer to be the President of the Batch for the Executive Committee, in charge of the overall planning and organization of our 15th year reunion. Ige has always been the man of the hour. Humor comes so easily to him. It is probably why he was able to catch the belle of the town, Judith Baguioen. Together they have three children, Athina, Andrei, Alyzza, ages 7, 6, 5, respectively. (Sunod-sunod ah!)

A couple of years ago, he ventured in politics as a candidate for Councilman of Santiago. Currently, they are very involved in a pawnshop and lending corporation which Judith manages, among other family businesses.

Behind the Scenes
By: Higee he-he-he

Dimension is having its first birthday! Iska was so inspired that she wrote a whole issue all by herself. There was no more room for me to write so I told her that I’ll just put in some jokes for the Grin Korner. Bad idea. She took out the whole Class Directory and made it a supplement. Then she altered the margins. Notice that we now take up almost the whole page. In the end, she left me with two whole pages to fill up! So, here I am staring at the monitor @ 3:00 A.M. thinking up ways to fill these two pages. Now, that’s one paragraph. he-he-he

Since this is an anniversary issue, allow me to take you on a stroll down memory lane and give you an idea of the blood, sweat and tears we shed to come up with the previous issues.

I actually started working for Dimension only this January. Iska called me sometime last year asking me if I could help her with something she was working on. I said yes and that was the last I heard from her.

Until I received an e-mail in January with a file attachment. That was the first time I learned about Dimension and it was already the 10th issue! Imagine my chagrin when I learned that I had already been profiled!

With no formal computer background whatsoever, I had just put up a web page at that time. Dimension was a welcome addition to the web page as it gave me a chance to add something every month.

The issues at that time were coming out late. I think the January issue was actually the December issue. I started contributing in the February issue which came out during the last week of February. I was waiting for Iska to send me the March issue but instead she sent me another e-mail asking me to write the whole thing. That is why the March issue barely came out on time.

My personal favorite is the April issue with Grace’s profile. That issue also came out during the latter part of the month. I then made it my goal to have Dimension come out on time. Regular publications come out with their issues one month ahead. Ours almost always comes out one month late.

However, May was a busy month because Rona came back for the last leg of her US tour. Almost all the weekends of May were spent out doing one thing or another. We had to beat another deadline this time, Rona’s flight home. This time it was really down the wire. There was something wrong with Iska’s e-mail so we had to do the editing over the phone. She then had to bring the final edition to the airport where Rona was already checking in.

The June issue came out on the first half of June so that was an improvement. Before Iska could catch her breath, I was on the phone again bugging her about the July issue. The July issue was a low point. We didn’t have anything related to the class to write about. Then there was the libel charge. I submitted my resignation to the publisher but it was thrown out (Sayang, I would have been free!). At least the July issue came out on time.

Thankfully it is the anniversary of Dimension and Iska’s inspired to write. Rona sent her contribution while Grace sent in a cartoon, so we’re set for the next month. Since the reunion is in December, I guess there’ll be enough stuff to write about until then. Still, we urge, no, we beg, other members of the class to send in contributions.

Dimension is our newsletter. This is your chance to showcase whatever literary talents (or otherwise) you have. I, for one, have no other qualification as an editor besides the journalism class we had in high school. There are others out there more qualified because they took up Mass Communication in college. Add the fact that we live in a land far from the majority of the class and you know why we have to depend on other people for news.

Since Dimension is free, we hope it reaches as many members of the class as possible. Unlike other publications, the ©Copyright in Dimension actually means that it is your right to make as many copies for distribution to classmates as you want. Hopefully, the cost of making copies is not too prohibitive.

A lot of good things happened to me because of Dimension. Whereas, before, I used to spend my time just watching five movies at a time, I now have some sort of a social life while I’m waiting for the next five new movies to come out. I’m proud to be part of Dimension. Here’s hoping that it stays for a lot more years.

MORE ERAPTIONS

Contributed by: Edwin de Guzman

In a meeting with Bill Clinton and other US officials, Erap overheard one senator ask Bill Clinton:

"Mr. President, if my father's son is my son's father, who is he?"

Bill Clinton replies, "Why, me, of course."

Erap then thinks to himself: "Aba, okay 'to, ah. Magamit nga kay pareng Tito (Sotto)."

So after the meeting, Erap goes to Tito Sotto and asks: "Pareng Tito, if my father's son is my son's father, who is he?"

Isip ngayon si Pareng Tito, but not being very bright himself, could not think of the answer.

So Tito Sotto replies, "Ah, Pareng Erap, magmi-miting na kami, eh. Sasagutin ko na lang yan mamaya." Tito Sotto then thinks to himself: "Yes! Nakatakas! Alam ko na, tatanungin ko si Ka Blas."

So Tito Sotto approaches Blas Ople and asks:

"Ka Blas! If my father's son is my son's father, who is he?"

Blas Ople replies, "That's so easy! It's me!"

Tito Sotto again thinks to himself: "Yes! May sagot na ako kay Pareng Erap."

So after the meeting, Tito Sotto approaches Erap. "Pareng Erap, ano uli yung tanong mo?"

Erap replies, "If my father's son is my son's father, who is he?"

Tito answers, "Ang dali naman! Siyempre, si Ka Blas!" Tawa si Erap,

"Ano ka ba naman! Hindi pare! Si Bill Clinton!"

The Class Directory

We have prepared a Directory of Alumni for this special issue. We would like to show how we have grown from a listing of 35 in August 1996 to our current listing of 130.

Thank you very much to our Santiago counterparts, for sending us a list of updates and new listings. If you would like to change any information on this listing, please drop us a note. Please send your information (via snail mail) to Marilou Bayaua or (via e-mail) Francisca Torres.
