FROM OUR DOCTOR TO YOURS...

In response to the proposed medical mission, Imelda has this to say to Jeffrey, "That is a very good project. If the Core Group chooses to offer this project to the rest of the class, we (U.S.-based alumni) will support it."

The primary concern that Imelda discussed was that of sponsorship. She cited that in her experiences in previous medical missions she assisted in while in medical school, the recipients always expected the doctors to provide the medication in addition to the free medical check-up. Other concerns include the types of services to offer and who the prospective recipients would be. She is willing to purchase and bring home the portion of supplies and medication for her share of this mission, that is how enthusiastic and genuinely eager she is to help.

Half a world away, the universal call to help our less fortunate brethren is felt and answered.

Project Proposals

In an effort to help organizers, we have researched and found a group, Filipinos in Kansas City, who have been to Santiago for a medical mission. Here’s what they said,

We brought a lot of equipment and medical supplies with us (a ship container-full), almost all donated. We gathered them year-round and placed in storage -- meaning you need storage. Sources of fund: golf tournament, donations, and a grant from Rotary International - approx. $45k.

Of course, this was quite a large operation - ob/gyn, thyroid, plastic, and eye surgeries and clinic for five days (Mon-Fri). Team was composed of 2 anesthetists, an ob/gyn surgeon, a general surgeon, an head/neck surgeon, a plastic surgeon, an internist, six nurses, and several non-medical personnel. Of course, you may opt to do a smaller scale mission.

If this is the project we will support, the first subject of discussion will be the type and scale of services that will be offered. We have to consider the fact that there are only three doctors, three dentists and a whole bunch of other medical personnel in our batch. As an onlooker, I would like to see a small but well received mission. Since I am not in the medical field, I’ll leave it up to our medical team to decide on what they would like to offer.

In the meantime, those of us outside the medical field should consider a second project that we can all enjoy and effectively contribute to for a successful reunion. When we originally envisioned this affair, we only had FUN in mind, so why not hold a ‘Casino Night’ to raise funds for LSS? It's similar to your typical poker & black jack nights, only on a larger scale. Can I hear yeah’s and nay’s or huh’s?

This year, as we organize our 15th year class reunion, another batch of LSS alumni are in the process of talking about theirs, batch 1972's silver class reunion. If you know someone in this batch, please have them contact Bong Tumanut in Kansas City through philkc@swbell.net. Bong asked if we would consider an LSS medical mission.

Just one more...

Dr. Imelda Bautista, our class valedictorian, has excelled in every endeavor she took. She passed her final board exam on January 5, 1997 and is now Board Certified in Pediatrics. She is now a full pledged pediatrician able to practice anywhere in the U.S. But, as expected, she is seeking higher education by sub-specializing in neonatology.

Another Hirit...

Edwin & Wennie de Guzman are expecting their third child in August. They have two boys ages 3 years and 11 months. He voluntarily offered the information that the baby was made in San Francisco during their Thanksgiving vacation.

PROFILE:
Michael and Grace Andres

Michael & Family
They say that one of the best professional combinations in a marriage is that of an engineer and a nurse. Michael and Grace certainly fit in this category. When Michael immigrated to the US, he chose to serve in the US Marines. He was briefly assigned to Germany and when he came back to the mainland, he was stationed in San Antonio where he met Grace, who was a military personnel as well. She served in the US Air Force.

Grace was a divorcee raising her little girl alone when she met Michael. When she left the service, she took the board exam for registered nurses, and although she was a nursing undergraduate when she came into the US, she passed the test. Her first impression of Michael... "he’s very quiet, he would come to the house to help, usually he cooks for us".

When Michael and Grace were dating, Ronald got a call about it. A few months later, Michael called again to say that he’s married and expecting.

In 1995, Ronald insisted on going to Texas to visit his long-time friend. When Michael greeted us at the door, out came from their bedroom a very pretty lady. She is every bit, the woman in Michael’s dreams and more.

Congratulations to Michael and Grace, for acquiring their second home. They are tentatively scheduled to move into their new home in March.

On a lighter side...

by Pedro Quintos

A woman could never get her husband to do anything around the house. He would come home from work, sit in front of the TV, eat dinner, and sit some more -- would never do those little household repairs that most husbands take care of. This frustrated the woman quite a bit. One day the toilet stopped up. When her husband got home, she said sweetly, "Honey, the toilet is clogged. Would you look at it?" Her husband snarled, "What do I look like? The tidy-bowl man?" and sat down on the sofa.

The next day, the garbage disposal wouldn't work. When her husband got home, she said, very nicely, "Honey, the disposal won't work. Would you try to fix it for me?" Once again, he growled, "What do I look like? Mr. Plumber?" The next day, the washing machine was on the blink. When her husband got home, she steeled her courage and said, "Honey, the washer isn't running." "Would you check on it?" And again was met with a snarl, "What do I look like? The Maytag repairman?"

Finally, she had had enough. The next morning, the woman called three repairmen to fix the toilet, the garbage disposal, and the washer. When her husband got home, she said, "Honey, I had the repairmen out today." He frowned, "Well, how much is that going to cost?" "Well, honey, they all said I could pay them by baking them a cake or having sex with them." "Well, what kind of cakes did you bake them?" he asked. She smiled. "What do I look like? Betty Crocker?"

************
A man walks into a pharmacy and asks for a pack of condoms. As soon as he has paid for them, he starts laughing and walks out. The next day, the same performance, with the man walking out laughing, fit to bust. The chemist thinks this odd and asks his assistant, if the man returns, to follow him. Sure enough, he comes into the store the next day, repeating his actions once more. The assistant duly follows. Half an hour later, he returns. "So did you follow him?" "I did." "And...where did he go? "Over to your house..."

The Class Directory

We understand that all the previous issues of Dimension have been circulated through the ‘pass-it-on’ method of distribution. We would really appreciate it if you could give us an exact mailing address so that we can mail all correspondences to you to make sure that you’re properly informed about the upcoming reunion. It is also another way for us to gather facts and figures.

Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated. Please send your information (via snail mail) to Marilou Bayaua or (via e-mail) to Francisca Torres.
