Barbara Wilson was born in London, England to Alfred’s sister--Margaret Clark and a young physician. Barbara’s parents died ten years ago in a car crash. Ever since, she has been supported by Alfred. She was a college student at Oxbridge University, majoring in computer sciences.
She comes by to see Alfred, and says she is on vacation from school. What has really happened, though, is that she has been kicked out of school because she's a motorcycle freak and a rebel. She is a welcome house guest and seems to be just a prim and proper school girl. However, at night Dick catches her dressed in an all leather biker outfit. She takes one of his motercycles and roars away. She has been doing this for several nights, so Dick decides to follow her. (Somewhat disguised). He finds her betting in a drag race, and he ends up in it as well. She wins the race and almost falls off of a bridge, but Dick saves her life. The two teenagers return home on only one bike.
They find out Alfred is not just sick, but he’s also dying. Alfred has been trying unsucessfully to mail his brother Wilfred, knowing he has been dying for some time. He gives it to Barbara, but tells her not to open it herself. She does it anyway and finds a Computer CD. She hacks into the CD-ROM using her mother’s nickname (Peg) as a password. She discovers all of the secrets contained on the disk. She descends into the Batcave with her newfound knowledge. She finds a computer program with Alfed's brain algorythms programmed into it. He figured she might want to help them, so he had already created a costume and she dons the idenity of Batgirl.
COSTUMES AND EQUIPMENT:
Batgirl’s costume is made of black rubber. She wears a sleek eye mask. Her jumpsuit is complete with a corset, and “nipples”. A Batgirl bat-logo is spread across the chest. She also wears thigh-length boots and high-heals. She wears a utility belt, and also a long flowing black cape. She also wears gloves with bat-fins.
Batgirl’s anti-freeze costume is a lot like the other one. Her eye mask has silver highlights, which is sometimes entirely replaced by a full bat-cowl. Her own bat-logo has silver highlights. Her boot tops and utility belt also are silver. The bat-fins on her gloves also are highlighted in silver.
Barbara has a portable eMate300 computer, that is capable of interfacing with Windows or Macintosh. As Batgirl she also carries a utility belt--filled with a variety of items. Among her many items there are: handcuffs, a bat-laser, batarrangs, and a bat-grappling gun.
Batgirl also rides a motercycle called the Batblade Cycle. This is what it says in the Batman and Robin Official Suvenior's Guide:
To battle Mr. Freeze, you need an ice-proof vehicle. In this one, Batgirl is ready for anything that's thrown at her. Originally designed to be a high speed chase vehicle, with the help of special effects this machine can perform on slick surfaces during extreme weather conditions. A cryonic ignition system regulates anti-freeze levels to ensure maximum performance at temperatures below -40 degrees Fahrenheit. Long, low wing extensions provide stability even in high, icy winds, and aid the driver when turning or during brief periods of airlift. With the push of a button the driver can activate the ice cutter, which sends the bike into a side skid, spraying a wave of frozen ice shavings onto attacking villains.
