John 20:11-16 but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept,
she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white,
seated where Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other
at the foot. They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?"
"They have taken my Lord away," she said, "and
I don't know where they have put him." At this, she turned
around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that
it was Jesus. "Woman," he said, "why are you crying?
Who is it you are looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener,
she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where
you have put him, and I will get him." Jesus said to her,
"Mary." She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic,

"Is that your own idea," Jesus asked, "or did others
talk to you about me?" "Am I a Jew?" Pilate replied.
"It was your people and your chief priests who handed you
over to me. What is it you have done?" Jesus said, "My
kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight
to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another
place." "You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus
answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact,
for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world,
to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens

replied Jesus, "have you never read, "'From the lips
of children and infants you have ordained praise'?"
Prophecy/OT:
Psa. 16:8-11 I have set the LORD
always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be
shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my

by casting lots.
John 19:23-24 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his
clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them,
with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven
in one piece from top to bottom. "Let's not tear it,"
they said to one another. "Let's decide by lot who will get
it." This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled
which said, "They divided my garments among them and cast

the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to

The Messiah would have a special
anointment of the Holy Spirit.
Fulfillment/NT:
Matt. 3:16-17 As soon as Jesus
was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven
was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove
and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This
is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."
Matt. 12:17-21 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the
prophet Isaiah: "Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the
one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and
he will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not quarrel or
cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. A bruised

handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

SUBJECT:
The Messiah's ascension.
Fulfillment/NT:
Acts 1:9 After he said this, he
was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from
their sight.
Eph. 4:8-13 This is why it says: "When he ascended on
high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men."
(What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended
to the lower, earthly regions? He who descended is the very one
who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the
whole universe.) It was he who gave some to be apostles, some
to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors
and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so
that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity
in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become
mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Sheba and Seba will present him gifts.
Is. 60:6 Herds of camels will cover your land, young camels of
Midian and Ephah. And all from Sheba will come, bearing gold and
incense and proclaiming the praise of the LORD.
SUBJECT:
The Messiah presented with gifts.
The historic application (Psa. 72:10) is to so Solomon.
The messianic application is amplified in Psa. 72:12-15 For he
will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no
one to help. He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save
the needy from death. He will rescue them from oppression and
violence, for precious is their blood in his sight. Long may he
live! May gold from Sheba be given him. May people ever pray for
him and bless him all day long.

the cross.
Mark 15:21 A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander
and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and
they forced him to carry the cross.
Luke 23:26 As they led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene,
who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him
and made him carry it behind Jesus.
Prophecy/OT:
Psa. 110:1 The LORD says to my
Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool
for your feet."
Jer. 23:6 In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live
in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD
Our Righteousness.
SUBJECT:
The Messiah would be called Lord.
Fulfillment/NT:
Matt. 22:43-44 He said to them,
"How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls
him 'Lord'? For he says, "'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit
at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet."
'
Mark 12:36-37 David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared:
"'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until
I put your enemies under your feet." ' David himself calls
him 'Lord.' How then can he be his son?" The large crowd
listened to him with delight.
Luke 2:11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to
you; he is Christ the Lord.
Luke 20:42-44 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms: "'The
Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right handuntil I make your
enemies a footstool for your feet." ' David calls him 'Lord.'
How then can he be his son?"
Acts 2:34-36 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

Prophecy/OT:
Psa. 110:4 The LORD has sworn and
will not change his mind: "You are a priest forever, in the
order of Melchizedek."
SUBJECT:
The Messiah will be considered a Priest.
Fulfillment/NT:
Heb. 3:1 Therefore, holy brothers,
who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus,
the apostle and high priest whom we confess.
Heb. 5:5-6 So Christ also did not take upon himself the glory
of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, "You are
my Son; today I have become your Father." And he says in
another place, "You are a priest forever, in the order of
Melchizedek."
Heb. 7:15-17 And what we have said is even more clear if another
priest like Melchizedek appears, one who has become a priest not
on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis
of the power of an indestructible life. For it is declared: "You
are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek."
Heb. 7:21 but he became a priest with an oath when God said to
him: "The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: 'You
are a priest forever.'"
Prophecy/OT:
Psa. 118:22-23 The stone the builders
rejected has become the capstone; the LORD has done this, and
it is marvelous in our eyes.
Is. 8:14 and he will be a sanctuary; but for both houses of Israel
he will be a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that
makes them fall. And for the people of Jerusalem he will be a
trap and a snare.
Is. 28:16 So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "See,
I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone
for a sure foundation; the one who trusts will never be dismayed.
SUBJECT:
The Messiah would be a "stone of stumbling" to the Jews.

"Have you never read in the Scriptures: "'The stone
the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done
this, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?
Mark 12:10-11 Haven't you read this scripture: "'The stone
the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done
this, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?"
Luke 20:17 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, "Then
what is the meaning of that which is written: "'The stone
the builders rejected has become the capstone'?
Acts 4:11 He is"'the stone you builders rejected, which has
become the capstone.'
Rom. 9:32 Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as
if it were by works. They stumbled over the "stumbling stone."
Eph. 2:20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,
with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
1Pet. 2:7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But
to those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected
has become the capstone,"

"Hosanna!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name
of the Lord!" "Blessed is the King of Israel!"
Prophecy/OT:
Psa. 132:11 The LORD swore an oath
to David, a sure oath that he will not revoke: "One of your
own descendants I will place on your throne -
Psa. 132:17 "Here I will make a horn grow for David and set
up a lamp for my anointed one.
Jer. 23:5 "The days are coming," declares the LORD,
"when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King
who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.
2Sam. 7:12-16 When your days are over and you rest with your fathers,
I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from
your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one
who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne
of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my
son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with the rod of men,
with floggings inflicted by men. But my love will never be taken
away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from
before you. Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before
me; your throne will be established forever.'"

The Messiah from the house of David.
This expectation is also scattered throughout the Talmuds.
Fulfillment/NT:

of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham:
Matt. 9:27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed
him, calling out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!"
Matt. 15:22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him,
crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me!...
Matt. 20:30-31 Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and
when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, "Lord,
Son of David, have mercy on us!" The crowd rebuked them and
told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, "Lord,
Son of David, have mercy on us!"
Matt. 21:9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed
shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" ...
Matt. 22:41-46 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus
asked them, "What do you think about the Christ? Whose son
is he?" "The son of David," they replied. He said
to them, "How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit,
calls him 'Lord'? For he says, "'The Lord said to my Lord:
"Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your
feet." ' If then David calls him 'Lord,' how can he be his
son?" No one could say a word in reply, and from that day
on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
Mark 10:47-48 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he
began to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"
Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all
the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"

he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph,
the son of Heli, ... the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son
of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David,
Luke 18:38-39 He called out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy
on me!" Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to
be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have
mercy on me!"
Acts 2:30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised
him [David] on oath that he would place one of his descendants
on his throne.
Acts 13:22-23 After removing Saul, he made David their king. He
testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse a man
after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.' "From
this man's descendants God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus,
as he promised.
Rev. 22:16 "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this

David, and the bright Morning Star."
Prophecy/OT:
Is. 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself
will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give
birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
Prophecy/OT:

Fulfillment/NT:
Matt. 1:18 This is how the birth
of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be
married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found
to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
Matt. 1:23-25 "The virgin will be with child and will
give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"-which
means, "God with us." When Joseph woke up, he did what
the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as
his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to
a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
Luke 1:26-35 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to
Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married
to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name
was Mary. The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you
who are highly favored! The Lord is with you." Mary was greatly
troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this
might be. But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary,
you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give
birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will
be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord
God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will
reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never
end." "How will this be," Mary asked the angel,
"since I am a virgin?" The angel answered, "The
Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High
will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called
the Son of God.

sea, along the Jordan - The people walking in darkness have seen
a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.
SUBJECT:
The Messiah's ministry to begin in Galilee.
Fulfillment/NT:
Matt. 4:12-17 When Jesus heard

in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali - to fulfill what was said
through the prophet Isaiah: "Land of Zebulun and land of
Naphtali, the way to the sea, along the Jordan, Galilee of the
Gentiles - the people living in darkness have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has
dawned." From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent,

justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal
of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.
Dan. 7:14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all
peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His
dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and
his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

victory? Where, O death, is your sting?"
Prophecy/OT:
Is. 32:3-4 Then the eyes of those
who see will no longer be closed, and the ears of those who hear
will listen. The mind of the rash will know and understand, and
the stammering tongue will be fluent and clear.
Is. 35:5-6 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears
of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and

Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their
synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing
every disease and sickness.
Matt. 11:4-6 Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John
what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk,

Mark 7:33-35 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus
put his fingers into the man's ears. Then he spit and touched
the man's tongue. He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh
said to him, "Ephphatha!" (which means, "Be opened!").
At this, the man's ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and
he began to speak plainly.
John 5:5-9 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight
years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had
been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do
you want to get well?" "Sir," the invalid replied,
"I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is
stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead
of me." Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your
mat and walk." At once the man was cured; he picked up his
mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,
John 9:6-11 Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some
mud with the saliva, and put it on the man's eyes. "Go,"
he told him, "wash in the Pool of Siloam" (this word
means Sent). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked,
"Isn't this the same man who used to sit and beg?" Some
claimed that he was. Others said, "No, he only looks like
him." But he himself insisted, "I am the man."
"How then were your eyes opened?" they demanded. He
replied, "The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it
on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and
washed, and then I could see."
John 11:43-44 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice,
"Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, his hands
and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his
face. Jesus said to them, "Take off the grave clothes and
let him go."

the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it.
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken."

Is. 53:3-6 He was despised and
rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.
Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we
esteemed him not. Surely he took up our infirmities and carried
our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by
him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought
us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all,
like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own
way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

[of life] and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant

own people and to the Gentiles."

charge - to the great amazement of the governor.

body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took
the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in
his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a
big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.
Prophecy/OT:
Is. 53:12 Therefore I will give

The messiah born in Bethlehem.
Fulfillment/NT:
Matt. 2:1-8 After Jesus was born
in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from
the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who
has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and
have come to worship him." When King Herod heard this he
was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called
together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law,
he asked them where the Christ was to be born. "In Bethlehem
in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet
has written: "'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you
will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'"
Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the
exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and
said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon
as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship
him."
Luke 2:4-7 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in
Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged
to the house and line of David. He went there to register with
Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a
child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be
born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped
him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no
room for them in the inn.
John 7:42 Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will come
from David's family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?"
Prophecy/OT:
Mic. 5:2 "But you, Bethlehem
Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out
of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose
origins are from of old, from ancient times [eternity]."

the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of
Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will
be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from
that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish
this.
Is. 41:4 Who has done this and carried it through, calling forth
the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD - with the first
of them and with the last - I am he."

and the heavens are the work of your hands.

Matt. 21:4-11 This took place to
fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: "Say to the
Daughter of Zion, 'See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding
on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'" The disciples
went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey
and the colt, placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them.
A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others
cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds
that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, "Hosanna
to the Son of David!" "Blessed is he who comes in the
name of the Lord!" "Hosanna in the highest!" When
Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked,
"Who is this?" The crowds answered, "This is Jesus,
the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee."
Luke 19:35-37 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on
the colt and put Jesus on it.
Luke 19:36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the
road. When he came near the place where the road goes down the
Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to
praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written,
"Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is
coming, seated on a donkey's colt."
Prophecy/OT:
Zech. 12:10 "And I will pour
out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit

son.

them into the house of the LORD to the potter.
SUBJECT:
What would be done with the betrayal
money.
Fulfillment/NT:
Matt. 27:3-7 When Judas, who had
betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with
remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests
and the elders. "I have sinned," he said, "for
I have betrayed innocent blood." "What is that to us?"
they replied. "That's your responsibility." So Judas
threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and
hanged himself. The chief priests picked up the coins and said,
"It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since
it is blood money." So they decided to use the money to buy
the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why
it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then what was
spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "They took
the thirty silver coins, the price set on him by the people of
Israel, and they used them to buy the potter's field, as the Lord
commanded me."
Prophecy/OT:
Zech. 12:10 "And I will pour

"for it is written: "'I will strike the shepherd, and
the sheep will be scattered.'
Mark 14:50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.
Prophecy/OT:
Mal. 3:1 "See, I will send

the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger
of the covenant, whom you desire, will come," says the LORD
Almighty.

Prophecy/OT:
Mal. 4:5-6 "See, I will send
you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the
LORD comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children,
and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will
come and strike the land with a curse."
Fulfillment/NT:
Matt. 11:13-14 For all the Prophets
and the Law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to accept
it, he is the Elijah who was to come.
Matt. 17:10-13 The disciples asked him, "Why then do the
teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?" Jesus
replied, "To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things.
But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize
him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same
way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." Then
the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John
the Baptist.
Mark 9:11-13 And they asked him, "Why do the teachers of
the law say that Elijah must come first?" Jesus replied,
"To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things.
Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and
be rejected? But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done
to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him."
Luke 1:16-17 Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to
the Lord their God. And he will go on before the Lord, in the
spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers
to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous
- to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
Prophecy/OT:
Jer. 31:31-34 "The time is
coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new
covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.
It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers
when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because
they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,"
declares the LORD. "This is the covenant I will make with
the house of Israel after that time," declares the LORD.
"I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts.
I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will
a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, 'Know
the LORD,' because they will all know me, from the least of them
to the greatest," declares the LORD. "For I will forgive
their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."
Fulfillment/NT:
Heb. 8:8-12 But God found fault
with the people and said: "The time is coming, declares the
Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel
and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant
I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to
lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to
my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord. This
is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that
time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and
write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will
be my people. No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man
his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' because they will all know
me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will forgive
their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."
Heb. 10:16-17 "This is the covenant I will make with them
after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds." Then he adds: "Their
sins and lawless acts I will remember no more."
