Prophecies in the New Testament

If you still can't quite decide about Jesus, here are some New Testament prophecies which have been fullfilled or have the potential to be fullfilled only in our lifetime which show the supernatural authorship of the scripture:

Revealing that the world is not flat (note: obviously this is not a prophecy, but it is very telling):

At the time of Christ's birth, the scientific world overwhelmingly viewed the earth as flat.

As such, both night and day would have to occur simultaneously across the planet; for only a spherical globe could encompass regions of dark and light at the same time.

Into this atmosphere came Jesus Christ, speaking the following words in Luke 17:34-36. "I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left." (NIV - Note: Verse 36 is only found in a few of the Greek manuscripts).

This passage (if verse 36 is indeed part of the original texts) clearly refers to a single instantaneous event, one which takes place during the night for those:

1. in bed;

2. during the early morning for those grinding grain; and

3. during the day for those working in the field.

It is the epitome of terrestrial accuracy.

Jesus spoke contrary to the science of the day, with little formal education, and was later proven correct.

His message provides a very powerful reason to believe in the truth of His word.

The Rebirth of Israel:

The prophecy: Jesus, echoing the prophecies of the OT prophets Ezekiel and Isaiah, predicted the rebirth of Israel:

Matt. 24:32-35 "Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

The fig tree has been a symbol for Israel throughout scripture. The law of "first Mention" is that when anything is mentioned the first time in scripture, it becomes that throughout God's Word. Thus the fig tree is Israel.

For instance, Joel 1:7 tells us that when the enemy armies were invading Israel, "He hath laid my vine waist, and barked my fig tree [Israel]. Then Hosea 9:10 states, "I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fug tree. Here again, God is speaking to the Jews.

Isaiah prophecied it would happen in one day= (Is. 66:8): "Who has ever heard of such a thing? Who has ever seen such things? Can a country be born in a day or a nation be brought forth in a moment? Yet no sooner is Zion in labor than she gives birth to her children."

Fulfillment: On the afternoon of May 14, 1948, the Jews proclaimed the independence of the reborn state of Israel. As an old rabbi blew on the traditional shofar, a ram's horn, the Jewish people celebrated the end of their worldwide dispersion and captivity in precise fulfillments of earlier prophecies.

At midnight, as May 15, 1948, began, the british Mandate officially ended and Israel became an independent nation. This day marked the first time since the days of Solomon that a unified Israel took its place as a sovereign, independent state among the nations of the world.

The Jewish Temple:

Roman emporer Julian (AD 331-363) revolted against the strict requirements of Christianity. As soon as he became the caesar he ordered all pagan temples to be reopened.

He knew all about Christianity and all about the words of Jesus foretelling the doom of Jerusalem and the temple:

The prophecy: Luke 21:5-6 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, "As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down."
Luke 21:24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

Fulfillment: Julian knew, too, how literally the words of Jesus had been fulfilled by the armies of Titus in AD 70. He knew that Zion had been abandoned.

Julian decided to defy God in heaven, to rebuild the Jewish temple as an act of defiance.

Historian Edward Gibbon wrote an account of what actually happened. His testimony can be taken as unbiased, since he himself was was an infidel and no friend to either Chriatianity or the Bible. The following is paraphrased. This account is in, "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, vol. 1 (New York: Random House, n.d.) pp778-781). Here is the account:

[Julian took to rebuild the Jewish temple in Jerusalem because the Christians of his day believed that a sentence of perpetual destruction had been leveled against Judaism. Julian believed that the success of his project would be a telling argument against belief in prophecy and the Bible.

Jews from all over the Roman empire hurried to mount Moriah in answer to the emporer's summons. Work began amid the jubilation of the Jews and the consternation of the Christians.

Gibbon told how an earthquake, a whirlwind, and a strange fiery eruption overturned and scattered the new foundations of the temple. He cited contemporary witnesses, with special attention to the testimony of Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus, whose unimpeachable character and testimony Gibbon conceded. This witness graphically told of "horrible balls of fire" erupting near the foundations, so that the workmen were scorched, and driven away. the supernatural phenomena continued, Gibbon wrote, until the whole project was abandoned.]

To this present time devout Jews gather at the Wailing Wall, what's left of Solomon's temple, to pray for the speedy rebuilding of their temple.

Worldwide Television Communications:

The prophecy: The prophet John prophesied that in the future tribulation, the Antichrist will kill two of God's witnesses who will stop the rain for 3 1/2 years. The prophet declared that the people living around the world will see their deaths and observe their bodies lying unburied for 3 1/2 days in Jerusalem. Then these people will watch as God resurrects His two witnesses to heaven:

Rev. 11:9-12 For three and a half days men from every people, tribe, language and nation will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial. The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts, because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth. But after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, "Come up here." And they went up to heaven in a cloud, while their enemies looked on.

Fulfillment: How could the news that these man were killed travel instantaneously around the world in only 3 1/2 days in any other generation other than today? As early as the 1920's it would have taken a week for the news to travel from Israel to Japan or New york. For the first time in history, this prophecy about the whole world watching an event in Jerusalem can be literally fulfilled today.

The Drying Up of the Euphrates River and a Military Highway Across Asia:

The prophecy: Another prophecy in Revelation declares that the Euphrates River will be dried up to allow this enormous army of two hundred million soldiers to cross from Asia to invade Israel:

Rev. 16:12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the East.

Throughout history, the Euphrates River has been an impenetrable military barrier between East and west. However the government of Turkey has constructed the huge Ataturk Dam that can now dam up the waters of the Euphrates for the first time in History.

The prophecy also tells that the way of the armies would be "prepared".

Fulfillment: The Chinese government has built a military super-highway across Asia heading directly toward Israel. This highway has no economic purpose and no foreigners are allowed anywhere near this road.

The Atomic Age:

The prophecy: 2Pet. 3:10-11 "But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, ..."

Fulfillment: There are a number of fascinating words in this prophecy:

"Elements" - The ancient Greeks thought there were 4 elements (earth, air, fire, and water). the English word "element" comes to us from the Latin "elementum", which is a translation of the Greek word "stoicheion" used here by Peter. Liddell and Scott in their Greek-English Lexicon claimed that in the field of physics "stoicheia" was defined as "the components into which matter is divided." In today's English, "stoicheia" would be expressed by the word "atoms".

"Destroyed" - The Greek is "luo", which means to "break up" or "melt". It is translated "unloose" in Mark 1:7, Luke 3:16, John 1:27, and Acts 13:25, in connection with John the Baptist's declaration that he was not worthy to untie the latchet on Christ's shoe. After raising Lazarus from the dead, Christ commanded that he was to be untied. "Loose him," He said (John 11:44). As the word is used in the New Testament, it conveyes the thought of setting free something that has been bound.

The elemental particles of matter, which we now call atoms, will be dissolved, untied, released. Their energies, now imprisoned, will be set free. The principle of nuclear fission, which is the base of the atomic bomb, is clearly implied in Peter's words.

"Roar" - Comes from a single Greek word found nowhere else in the New Testament: "rhoizedon". It refers to the whizzing of an arrow rushing to its target. According to W.E. Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, the word also signifies "with rushing sound as of roaring flames."

"Fire" - A translation of the Greek word "kausoo", a medical term denoting a fever. Peter's use of it is said to be the only known application of the word to inanimate objects.

Peter accurately described the untying of the atom and the resulting rushing, fiery destruction that follows it.

Worldwide Famine

The prophecy: Revelation 6:5-6 - "When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, "A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!""

Fulfillment: The scales represent famine. The prophet explains that a day's wages at that time will only buy enough wheat to feed the workman, not his family.

Despite the great advances in food production and food storage techniques, more people are starving today than at any other time in history.

"The United Nations claims that over thirty million people in Africa are now at risk of dying from the most devastating famine in this century.

The UN estimates that one billion people are in danger of starvation while another billion people lack proper nutrition.

North American food reserves are also at the lowest level in sixty years as surplus food is sent to Russia, Bosnia and Africa."

The Rise in Major Killer Earthquakes

The prophecy: Matthew 24:7 - "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains."

Fulfillment: Just as the frequency of birth pains increases as the arrival of the baby is near, the Bible predicts earthquakes come in the same pattern.
1900 to 1949 = Average 3 major earthquakes per decade
1950s = 9 killer earthquakes
1960s = 13 killer earthquakes
1970s = 56 killer earthquakes
1980s = 74 killer earthquakes
1990s = At the present rate, we will experience 125 major killer earthquakes in this decade.

Preparations for the Mark of the Beast

The prophecy: Revelation 13:16-18 - "He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name. This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666."

Fulfillment: "In America today, people are 95 percent cashless. Studies reveal that less than 5 percent of the total money in our society exists as paper currency or coins."

With the advancement of the internet, people are already buying, selling and banking at home with their own personal identification numbers.

"For the first time in history, we are developing technology that would allow tiny computer chips holding your complete medical and financial records to be placed beneath the skin of the right hand or forehead.

Scientists have developed miniature computer chip that can hold five gigabytes of information in a chip the size of a dime.

This chip could also be configured in a shape the size of two grains of rice that could be injected beneath the skin. Personal information can be retrieved through electronic scanners."

Gospel Preached in All the World

The prophecy: Matthew 24:14 - "And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come."

Fulfillment: The Bible has now been translated into more than 3,850 languages in every nation, tribe and dialect on this planet. Over eighty-five thousand people accept Jesus as their personal Savior every day.  There were only 1 million Christians in China in 1949. Today, the lowest estimates calculate that there are more than one hundred million true followers of Christ in communist China.3
