Was Jesus a liar?

Everyone who reads the Gospels agrees that Jesus was a good and wise man, a great and profound teacher. Most non-religious people, and even many people of other religions, like Gandhi, see him as history's greatest moral teacher. He is in short, eminently trustworthy.

But, one of the common mistakes made of Jesus is saying that He was "just" a great moral teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.

Someone who claims to be God and is knowingly not, is not a good and wise man but an evil man:

* (1) Throughout the Gospels Jesus claimed to be God (See the "Claims of Divinity" page).

* (2) If he knew His claims were false, He made a deliberate misrepresentation.

* (3) If He made a deliberate misrepresentation, He was a liar.

* (4) If He was a liar, He was also a hypocrite - because He told others to be honest, whatever the cost, while Himself teaching and living a colossal lie.

* (5) If all this is true, then He is also a demon - because He told others to trust Him for their eternal destiny. If He could not back up His claims and knew it, then He was unspeakably evil.

And He is also responsible for the multitudes who were tortured and martyred because of their faith in Him, and the ruthless tyrants who tortured and murdered innocent men, women and children under the sign of the cross!

*(6) And lastly, He was a fool because it was His claims to being God that led to His crucifixion, and it gained Him absolutely nothing the world has to offer.

If Jesus was a liar, then He had to have been the most clever, cunning, blasphemously wicked, satanic deceiver the world has ever known. If orthodox Christianity is a lie, it is by far the biggest and baddest lie ever told, and Jesus is the biggest and baddest liar.

Why couldn't Jesus be a hypocritical evil liar?:

(A) Because He has the wrong psychological profile. He was unselfish, loving, caring, compassionate, and passionate about teaching truth and helping others to truth. Liars lie for selfish reasons, like money, fame, pleasure, and/or power. Jesus gave up all worldly goods, and life itself.

(B) There is no conceivable motive for His lie. It brought Him hatred, rejection, misunderstanding, persecution, torture and death - and he knew it would!.

(C) He could not have hoped that His "lie" would be successful, for the Jews were the last people in the world to have worshiped a man, and Jesus, as a Jew, would have known that. This was total blasphemy deserving of death.

The Romans would be aggressively resistant to the coming of a "new King". In fact, we see Him at every step of His life's way fully knowing and predicting his own execution, and claiming that He came to earth precisely for that reason: to suffer and die.
