Prologue (9 Jan 03) - A young boy and girl are creeping around in a building when they discover two cages, each containing a pokémon.  Suddenly, sirens sound and voices cry out, and the pokémon become frantic.  A man runs into the room and tries to take the cages, but the larger one falls on his chest and pins him to the ground.  The children go to the pokémon, who calm down instantly.  A huge bird creature appears at the door and shoots a burst of flames into the room.

Chapter One: Ignition - It's a particularly cold day at school, but Kit feels hot. She goes outside the classroom to get some fresh air, when the sky turns black and rain begins to pour down. The raindrops feel like fire on Kit's skin, and without knowing what she's doing, she runs out of school to the Genesis Bushland. There, she sees Ho-Oh and Lugia battling in the sky. Ho-Oh is defeated, and turns into a ball of flames, finally settling on the ground in a pile of ash. Kit touches the ash, and it solidifies into a fire stone. The stone reacts, and her body is engulfed with flames until she passes out.

Chapter Two: Cam (09 Feb 03) - Kit is woken by a kecleon named Cam. She is shocked to find that she can understand his speech. Her body also feels strange, and everything around her seems bigger. When she tries to walk, she finds herself walking on four legs. Cam begins to lead her to Eustacia, who he claims can heal her. Along the way, she notices that she can understand the words of all the pokémon they meet. Finally they come to a river, where she sees her reflection. When she sees that it's not the face she recognises as her own, she faints.

Chapter Three: Recognition (24 Feb 03) - Kit awakes in a cave and finds her body back to normal, however she can still understand pokémon speech. Eustacia turns out to be a chansey who tells Kit that she was brought to her as a vulpix, but changed back to a human in her sleep. Since humans are not allowed in Eustacia's secret garden, she asks her to leave. On the way out, Kit sees Cam, and tries to talk to him, however he cannot understand her human speech. Kit goes back home, and goes to Amanda's house to pick up her school bag, but while she's there she gets attacked by Amanda's pet wooper, Woopy. She heads home soaking wet, and is hanging her uniform out to dry when Taylor from the apartment next to hers confronts her and tells her that the rain that day was from the pokémon move Rain Dance.

Chapter Four: Reunion - Kit's grade goes camping in the Aruto National Park. In the middle of the night, one of Kit's friends, Kimi gets worried about a sound outside. Kit goes to investigate. She ventures into the bushes and finds that a charmeleon has just knocked Cam out. Kit becomes furious at the charmeleon and gets into an argument with him. The charmeleon uses an Ember attack on her, and the fire spreads over her body. She becomes a vulpix again, and the charmeleon runs away in fear.

Chapter Five: Magma Battle - Still a vulpix, Kit runs to the rangers' cabin to look for help. She finds a meowth called Tom who gives her a potion to help heal Cam. She goes back and heals him, and when he wakes up he explains that humans brought him to the Aruto National Park. When he asks Kit how she got there, she tries to explain that she's really a human, but before she can say much they are confronted by two humans, a man and a woman. The man orders his poochyena to attack Kit, and she is easily weakened by it. Cam tries to help Kit out, but even with his help, she is no match for Poochyena, and is knocked out.

Chapter Six: Golden Sun and Silver Moon - Kit wakes up in the rangers' cabin as a human. A ranger explains to her that he found her passed out near some Team Magma agents, but that he chased them away. The following night, the grade listens to a legend told by the native Arutonians about the sun and the moon. They believed that Sun and Moon were the ancient rulers of the earth, but were always arguing so they decided to split the day in half between them. Moon created pokémon which he said were to be the creatures of the night, but really he wanted to overthrow Sun with them. Some of the pokémon found themselves unsuited to the night, however, so they decided to stay awake during the day, where they met humans. When Moon tried to fight Sun with his night pokémon, he was easily defeated because Sun's day pokémon had bonded with humans, which had made them stronger.

Chapter Seven: Communication Gap (03 July 03) - Kit's camp group goes canoeing. When she and Kimi are carrying their canoe towards the river, they find an ekans inside. Kit tries to coax the ekans out, but the camp instructor yells at her for interfering with wild pokémon, and tells her she's not allowed to go canoeing anymore. She sits alone on the shore while the others go canoeing, and is shocked when Cam appears. Cam saw her turn back into a human after the fight with Poochyena, so he now knows that she is both a human and a vulpix. She tries to talk to him, but he cannot understand her words while she's a human. Kimi finishes canoeing and comes to talk to Kit, scaring Cam away. Kit tries to look for Cam but instead finds the charmeleon who attacked him the other night. It appears that the charmeleon can speak English, as all the other students can understand him too. Kit spots the two Team Magma agents in the distance, and calls out to them to come and get her.

Chapter Eight: Colour Change (29 Aug 03) - The Team Magma agents, whose names are Rose and Adrian, reveal that the charmeleon is named Leon and is part of their team. They want to capture Kit and study her, so they try to attack her. Kit feels herself about to transform into a vulpix, but doesn't want to in front of all her friends. She pleads with Ho-Oh not to let her become a vulpix, and manages to avoid the transformation. Leon tries to attack her anyway, and Cam reappears to defend her. Leon fights with Cam and uses an Ember attack on him. The park ranger warns Kit to stay away from Cam because of his Colour Change ability. When she turns back to Cam, she sees that his scales have become red and he has become furious and blood-thirsty.

Chapter Nine: The Capture (24 Sep 03) - Cam battles with Leon to defend Kit. Kit begs with Cam to stop fighting but he refuses. Rose orders Numel to attack Cam, and he knocks out both Cam and Leon using Dig. Kit pulls Cam into her arms protectively, but then Rose throws a pokéball and captures Cam. She tells Kit that she'll release Cam if she gives herself up to Team Magma, but Kit refuses. Team Magma flies away in a helicopter, taking Cam with them. That night, Kit finds Tom and asks for his help. They find Team Magma asleep with Numel on guard duty. Kit talks Numel into giving her Cam. He gives her a pokéball, and she and Tom leave. Kit opens the pokéball to find that it is not Cam, but a grovyle. The grovyle attacks her and wakes up Team Magma, who come running and surround Kit.
