Personal Bio:

Written By Brandon Boyd

"Nothing is true. All is permitted."
-Last words of Hassan i Sabbah X

To think that one's life is interesting enough to write about is indeed flattering. I wouldn't say though that my life was necessarily in that particular category.

For I still have a couple of nasty drug addictions to go through, a divorce or two to fight out, two filed bankruptcies, an arrest for indecent exposure and the total public annihilation of this band to bear before I can go as far as calling my life 'interesting'. Then, of course, I must tell my story on one of the myriad different television documentaries. Spill my guts, cry for the world, then put out a book called, "A Life Less Lived." (How Incubus ruined my childhood, etc, etc.) But, alas! 'Interesting' is a multi-interpretable term! And besides, a few of you have expressed desires to know the goings on in this little atmosphere of mine, so I guess I'll elucidate.

I was born in the harsh, desert climate of Van Nuys, California, where I was orphaned and taken in by a pack of hungry native coyotes. Their initial intention was to have me for an appetizer before they went on their nightly suburban feline hunt, but I survived only because the leader of the pack saw potential in me as a hunter and a spreader of coyote seed! From there, our friendship was forged, and I became known as Brandon of the Jungle. They taught me the ways of the Valley, and I quickly became one of the pack's most vocal howlers! Hence my present day ability to sing. When I was old enough, I learned to catch house pets, insects and rodents! Which is where I got these kickin' thigh muscles!

At age 11, I began impressing the pack and local wild-life photographers with my skill in carpentry. I would build elaborate shelters for my family and I using the ever-abundant palm frawns, pieces of discarded twine and snot. And this is where my first encounter with my present cohorts in music came into play. I was the ripe age of 15, and was busy chasing a female coyote in heat down a dusty trail one afternoon, when I turned a corner and ran into the other guys in the band. They were sitting inside one of my more arty housings and enjoying it's refuge from the blistering California sun. I stepped inside and made the only noises I knew how, and tried to express to them my discontent for invading my space. They replied with fascination at my inhuman grunts, growls and wales, and asked me to be in their band, Incubus. I, of course, did not know at the time what they meant nor did I care. I simply started biting the shit out of the drummer's ass. Which is where Jose's fear of things canine comes into play.

Things eventually calmed down and I started to enjoy the fresh perspectives these boys brought into my reality. The guys came back every day after that and taught me to speak English and sing. WE began playing together about a month later when my powers of speech and wit began developing. And with my past experience in snot carpentry, I built us our first band rehearsal space! My taste for insects and things fury has not subsided. But I believe that those are just old habits dying hard. Luckily, we tour the Mid-west of America frequently where these delicacies are more appreciated and less persecuted! I have been in this, my first and only band, now for nine years, and have learned worlds about life, love, loss and humanity. It is and has been such a different experience from my roots as a wild, scavenger dog! But I have to say that I've enjoyed every minute of it.

Being in this band has shown me that any mutt can break the mold and prosper. And being the first orphan who was raised by wolves to be in a rock band reinforces that creto in me every day. Straying from the norm has done nothing but good for me in my 23 years alive this time around. And I will continue to do so in this sphere, for better or worse.

Now, does that not so brief description of my life deserve the title, 'Interesting'? Likely, not. You decide.

For more details about me and my further mis-adventures on deserted islands, literary discoveries, art, sex, love, hairstyles, international cuisine and general rock and roll mayhem, feel free to come into my live page!

IO biography:

Brandon Boyd grew up in Calabasas, CA. His parents Dolly and Charles, both of whom had experience in entertainment, had nurtured his creative side since he was a child. He had first met Jose Pasillas in elementary school in the 80's, but it wasn't until high school that he was asked to join a band that already included Jose, Mike Einziger, and Alex Katunich. Brandon's vocal abilities, which were for the most part self taught (he had taken two lessons before he ran out of money, but he claims he learned everything he would need), and proved to be the final essential element for the band.  Between writing early songs and surfing, the four quickly became the best of friends. As they developed more and more songs, the band quickly became a popular show around the neighborhood.

When the band decided to play their first show at the Roxy, the time came to choose a band name.  Brandon's suggestion, "Spiral Staircase," was denied in favor of Mike's suggestion, selected at random from a dicionary: Incubus. Brandon put his other artistic talents to good use, drawing concert flyers advertising their early performances.  At first, Brandon had copied several drawings from a sex book that Mike's mom had given them, but he decided to stop using it after several prospective fans had been confused by their flyers ("What kind of band is this?").

Through the years, Brandon's vocal talent has been at the forefront of the band's success. His strong voice was part of what attracted Sony's Epic/Immortal records, and the band signed a deal in 1996. Behind Boyd, the band continued to gain support behind their first two major releases, SCIENCE and Make Yourself. In 2000, the band's popularity exploded into the mainstream behind the songs "Pardon Me", "Stellar", and "Drive".

Over the years, Brandon's lyrics have expressed a range of different ideas.  His early work, which was often light and playful, was no doubt influenced in part by his use of marijuana.  According to Brandon, after smoking his first joint with his older brother Darren, the poetic floodgates had been opened inside of his brain.

His first artistic love, however, remains drawing. Before the band decided to concentrate on music full time, he and Jose had attneded Moorepark College full time as art students.

Today, Brandon spends his time surfing, writing, drawing, and spending time with friends, family, his girlfriend Carolyn and canine companion "Sativa".

Mike's Setup:

Personal Bio:

Written By Mike Einziger

My full name is Michael Aaron Einziger and I play guitar in a silly rock band called Incubus. I was born in Los Angeles, Ca. on June 21st, 1976. My favorite color is blue (at least right now it is). My favorite cereal is Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I like to spend my spare time working on music (I'm a mad work-aholic). I can run really fast when I want to. I love Indian food. I do not have a girlfriend. I really love to play golf because it gives me a chance to hang out with my dad. I have a fat white Labador Retriever named RUFUS. And a not-so-fat Lab named BILLY. I like to play Basketball. My favorite place to go while on tour is New York City (it's fun). I have an older sister named Rachel. My little brothers Ben and Paul have a band together with Brandon's little brother called Vent. I admit that I like that Christina Aguilera song. My mom rules, she's the coolest.

I play Paul Reed Smith guitars and Mesa Boogie Amplifiers because they're the best, even though they cost a lot of money. I used to ride horses a lot when I was younger. Brandon and I did a report for school together on Tahiti when we were 11 years old. The first song that I learned how to play on the guitar was the theme song to James Bond. My first concert was the Go-Go's when I was 6, followed shortly after by Michael Jackson when I was 7. The first album I ever owned was the Soundtrack to Star Wars. My first real guitar hero was Steve Vai. I love touring in Europe. I'm not allowed to snowboard anymore for fear of snapping off one of my fingers, but that’s ok, because I'm still allowed to surf. I've been surfing for 11 years. It's fun. Someday I would love to score the music for a wierd major motion picture, like BeetleJuice. I love our new album, "Make Yourself". I'm good at soccer. It's hard for me to go shopping because I'm extremely indecisive. I love Bjork's music, I listen to it often. I'm not really allowed to skateboard anymore, but I do sometimes anyway. Everyone should own a Led Zeppelin album and a Police album. South Park is funny. I love anything that has to do with Space Exploration. I believe that aliens exist, but I've never seen one.

IO Notes

Mike switched to a customised  62 Jazzmaster after the first performance of the Time Lapse Consortium. Previously, he used an array of customised Paul Reed Smith guitars, including a custom artist package archtop, a goldtop archtop, and hollowbody for Drop D songs.

Personal Bio:
Written By Jose Pasillas

I began playing drums in 1990, pretty much when the band started to form. Before that I had been playing air drums for about two years and got pretty good. It was an impressive sight, and actually made me look like I knew how to play. I have never had any formal training in my 9 years of playing, which has its positives and negatives, but I think for the most part it’s been okay. Unfortunately discipline is not really a word I would associate with my drum playing. I learned how to play my instrument by studying my favorite musicians (Stuart Copeland, Tim Alexander, Chad Sexton, etc.) and by listening to many styles of music, which I believe is key to expanding your playing and technique. I basically would listen to my favorite bands and steal as much as I could from the drummer and incorporate it in my playing. So yes, I am a thief!

I have seen and listened to many bands and feel that I have taken something from all of them to help my playing, whether it is a way of setting up my drums, playing a beat, learning a roll, or whatever. There will always be an infinite amount of musicians for everyone to learn from.

I met my band mates through school. I met Brandon in the 4th grade, where we spent a lot of time playing commando in the bushes with water guns. Two years later we met Mike in jr. high where mike and I spent a lot of time skateboarding. Dirk came around in high school, I met him through Mike when we started to jam together (me, Mike and Dirk). We had all just began playing our instruments and were not very good, but did have a great time.

We would cover bands like Metallica and Megadeth. I personally never was into those metal bands, but Mike and Dirk were, so I would just learned them for fun. We actually played a couple of parties as a trio then a couple of months later, Brandon joined us, and at that time, we began writing our own music. We played all through high school and continued after we graduated.

We hooked up with Kilmore in the beginning of 98 and our band was complete. Now it is almost 2000 and we are still writing and playing together.

So in a nutshell, that is a brief history in time of Incubus and myself. One last thing, I like to take long walks on the beach.

Personal Bio: (work in progress)

A New Jersey Native, Ben Kenney was brought into the band after the departure of original bassist Alex "Dirk Lance" Katunich.  Ben plays a half dozen instruments, and has influences ranging from punk and classic rock to hip-hop.  He is/has been a part of several bands, including Super Grub and the Roots. In person, Ben is a pretty quiet and laid back guy, but on stage he becomes very lively and energetic.  He is capable of laying down a smoothe bass solo and providing the bulk of the backing vocals for the band.  Among his off stage hobbies are drawing and racing remote controlled nitro powered cars.

The Roots "Phreonology":

"Their new member, guitarist Ben Kenney,
proves to be a key addition, and his scratch
guitar licks transform songs such as
"The Seed 2.0" into marvelously abrasive wig-outs."

Personal Bio:

Written By Chris Kilmore

After accidentally being ejected from the underworlds of Io (one of the moons of Jupiter), I traveled inter-dimensionally to this place presently named Earth. The date...1973. The place...Pittsburgh, PA. Immediately on the search for suitable hosts brought me to a small town called Dillsburg, PA, where I developed my inner senses at the age of 13. I discouraged the only means of communicating with my species...the turntable. So instantly I set out in the underworlds of various East coast cities to train. My abilities improved, however, communication was never established. Knowing it was time to expand my East coast web, I traveled to LA where I was sought out by fellow turntablists...the Jedi Knights. After becoming a Jedi master, I was sent on a mission...promote the turntable as a musical instrument...my contacts...Incubus.

Status:

Currently in contact...still communicating

Fighting Tips:

Is energized by the force contained in each and every fan

IO biography:

Chris Kilmore was raised outside of Pittsburgh PA by an adoptive family. Spinning records had been intruduced to Chris the first time he saw "Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince" perform live, and he fell in love with it immediately.  He bought his first table after getting a job at a fast food joint, and his Dad bought him the matching counterpart. As an adult, Kilmore picked up and moved out west to LA in pursuit of his musical career. He nailed down a few gigs DJ'ing at a local LA clubs, and later joined a DJ battle crew, the Jedi Knights (Kilmore is a HUGE starwars fan). In 1998, Kilmore happened upon a golden opportunity when he got the chance to try out for a rock band who had recently parted ways with their original DJ.  Kilmore had one audition with the band incubus, and was immediately taken aboard.  The rest of the band was instantly impresssed with Kilmore, who quickly learned the parts for over a dozen songs in a matter of days.  There was little time to wait before getting his first taste of action, as the band was in the middle of a tour.  Kilmore performed brilliantly.

Chris had gone from spinning records in semi-anonymity to performing in front of thousands of people practically overnight. In fact, before joining the band, Chris had been forced to go without electricity in his apartment because he could not afford the bill.

After a stretch of constant touring, the band, now with Kilmore, took time off to write and record their second full length major label album, Make Yourself.  Chris's addition to the band gave them a deeper, more organic texture to the music than had been heard before.  The album would prove to be a wild success, culminating with the single "Drive".

With the bands 2001 followup "Morning View" and into today, Chris continues to provide an added creative force to the band.
