Well this is going to be my genetics page. I'm not an expert, and I certainly don't know all there is to know. Basically this is just a record of the clan's gentics. I will include some links to other gerbil gentics and color pages as well as the AGS section on colors.

If you don't know anything about genetics, you might want to go here to learn what all those letters are for. This is a page from The Dani Clan website, one of the best sites I've come across for gerbil care and breeding. I will put the link to the site on my links page, along with several other sites I like.

These two litters are where the majority of my gerbs came from. Spring and Misty are from the first litter, as is Nibble. Mario, Luigi, Yoshi and Windy are all from the second.

1 red fox male

2 Apricot/RESN males

1 Apricot/RESN female

This is the litter that Foxy, Pirate, Dave and Abby came from. The colors for these guys are a little harder to guess at because of the possibility of the c(h) floating around, that would lighten coat colors. I'm not sure if Foxy, for example, is a Red Fox, or a Light Red Fox. The Apricot/Red-Eyed Silver Nutmeg question is because both coat colors look similar, so I'm told. Having no comparison, I just don't know. I do know they aren't c(h)c(h) because they were all that plae gold that nutmegs and silver nutmegs and polar foxes are before they molt, and all three of them still have that faint peach color tinting their coats, unlike Tina, who has NO other color in her coat and never has. Also, their eyes are regualr ruby colored, rather than pink.

AaPpC*eeGg

1 spotted silver nutmeg female

1 spotted SN/PF(?) male (died at three weeks)

With this pair, I ended up with a DEH male from the first litter, and a nutmeg female, a DEH female and a spotted SN female from the second litter. The Nutmeg and DEH sisters are living happily with my sister, and I'm going to place my spotted silver nutmeg with Nibble, my pied black.

Well, I did finally pair Ashe with Nibble. I was going to pair her with this really sweet Agouti boy we named Timber, but there was a complete personality clash, and Timber is now happily living with Kibble, the original Patriarch of the Gemstar Clan. Nibble, who used to be with Kibble, is now with Ashe and their first litter is absolutely beautiful. I'm hoping to get a black male in her next litter so I can back-breed to bring out the recessive "e" and "g". But . . . we'll have to wait and see how that works out. You'll notice I have a little bit of doubt as to whether the boys are lilacs or doves or maybe one of each. I'll have to wait and see. I've had one spotted lilac (Kibble) who is lighter than your normal lilac, as well as several doves and pied doves. When the babies get about three weeks I'll compare their color to Kibble and figure out which is which.

And that's my little gerbil update. I think I'll have much better luck with this litter than with poor Abby's because for one, I'm home, where I wasn't when Abby had her two litters. And for two, I'm not using the same bedding that was being used for Abby and Timonthy. I really think that is part of why we lost so many of Abby's babies. :( Here's hoping!

If you are really interested in genotypes of the different coat colors, here's a few more pages:

The Gerbils Color Pallete
This page takes a long time to load because of all the graphics, but it is worth it!

Gerbil Coat Colors
This page doesn't list the genotypes, but it does have some very good pictures of many of the coat colors.

The Gerbil Gene Predictor
This page is a sort of gene calculator. You can enter different genotypes and get percentages and possibilties of the colors of the offspring. Really very handy.

The AGS Color Strips page
This is a page on the American Gerbil Society site. It shows alot of different colors from pigment to molt. It's really neat, and it also has a section that helps you to figure out the possible color of your gerbil if you don't know it's parentage. Check it out!
