- Written by Georgina Garbett (in 1997) Doug lives in a house in London with his wife, Josie. He enjoys tending the backyard, which is beautified with many different flowering plants, especially roses and lilacs, and a grapevine. He is very proud of his roses, especially, and they are very beautiful. Doug seems to have been born with a green thumb. One of Doug’s hobbies is model crafts, especially trains and train sets. He even boasts of a large model railway in his basement, much of which he built and/or worked on himself, including the trains. He generally likes using his hands to create things, and prefers working with wood. He has built a roof over his large back patio, and is currently in the process of remodeling his bathroom. He also tends to collect things, although much of his collection consists of “a lot of junk” - things he has no use for. When asked about his philosophy of life, he will tell you that the best thing you can do is learn from your mistakes and from the mistakes of others. He will also tell you to search out “that thing in life that’s gonna make you happy.” He enjoys visiting family, and is especially happy when he visits with his children, and when he sees them improving themselves and making themselves happy. He is also obviously proud of his academic achievements, and hopes that his children will also be able to be proud of themselves in this way, although he is very pleased when they strive for high achievement in other areas also. Doug spent most of his life in the auto industry, as an auto mechanic, until injury to his back forced him to leave this field. He went to school to become a teacher, he owned and managed several gasoline stations, he also worked in a car dealership. Now he works for a shipping company, and seems content there. When asked if there was anything in his life he may regret, his answer
is: that he had never joined the air force to get his pilot’s licence.
All through his life he has loved aircraft - as a youth he used to spend
long days sitting outside the Toronto airport, watching the planes take
off and land, as he dreamed of flying one someday. He still goes
to air shows to watch the planes flying.
