GODFREY'S CHILDREN
A Project of Hope
Mission of Godfrey's Children
To identify, care for and sponsor children
infected and affected by HIV/AIDS (irrespective of race, creed, religion or gender) in
Tanzania and the rest of Africa.
Godfrey's Children is a project named
after the late Godfrey Msemwa, a medical student in Tanzania. He was a true leader, always
putting other people's interests before his own, especially when fighting HIV and AIDS.
Godfrey's Children is a project that
focuses on community empowerment in fighting HIV/AIDS. The project develops close ties
with government sectors, religious organizations, United Nations agencies, international
development cooperation agencies, Non-governmental organizations, companies and
individuals to assist community-based initiatives.
To attain this mission, Godfrey's Children
is involved in the following:
Giving care,
compassion and empathy to orphaned and neglected HIV affected children to nurture the
child's personality, talents, emotional and
spiritual growth.
Offering tangible
goods such as shelter, food and clothing for the physical and mental development of the
child.
Providing
educational and apprenticeship opportunities.
Working closely
with the community, government sectors, religious organizations, United Nations agencies,
international development cooperation agencies,
NGOs, companies and individuals within and outside of Tanzania.
Providing access to
facilities for preventive, promotive and medical services.
Providing access to
facilities for primary, secondary school, post-secondary education and vocational
training.
Seeking local and
foreign donors/ sponsors for financial support to cover the children's education and
medical costs.
Collaborating with
student and organizations in Tanzania and abroad.
Coordinating a team
of part-time volunteers from the community (i.e. secondary school and university students,
retired persons, advocates, and healthcare
provides such as social workers) to visit and befriend the orphaned children. This will
facilitate in getting the children to integrate
into society.
Offering volunteer
opportunities (for national and international individuals/ organizations) to assist
Godfrey's Children in providing program
services.
Educating society
on the plight of orphaned children.
Promoting voluntary
HIV testing to reduce the risk of HIV transmission.
Creating and
sustain an increased awareness of HIV/AIDS through education and communication for
behavior change amongst individuals and within
the community.
Establishing and
maintain a system of identification of neglected and orphaned HIV positive orphans linking
hospitals to community services in a
complementary relationship.
Giving support to
sibling headed households to minimize the impact of HIV/AIDS on their lives.
Educating pre- and
post-natal HIV positive mothers in proper breast feeding techniques. Such education will
be individually tailored but education will also
be given to the community, husbands, partners and family members on
breast-feeding and HIV transmission.
Promote community
participation in HIV/AIDS prevention education and activities.
Closely monitoring
national and international research findings in the care of HIV positive children.
Establishing a home
for orphans and acquire a building to establish a training center.
Initiating
income-generating projects in the community.
Ensuring that the
right of the child is adhered to in accordance to the United Nation's Convention on the
Rights of the Child.
