Civil Lawsuits
Look Before You Leap
Educate Yourself
Educate Yourself

Educate yourself. This is paramount. Most people go into a legal arena leaving everything up to the attorney they chose. Very unwise!

It's estimated only 10% of potential litigants do any research on their own. Remember your attorney represents you. You are the victim and know your case better than anyone, including you attorney, ultimately it will be up to you to know what is going on and to be and stay informed as to your case. By the time you have gone through a civil matter you would qualify to be a legal aid.

It's important to know what the laws are regarding your case, and the process and outcome of cases similar to your own. Often a litigant has more time than their attorney to do research to find information to help their attorney with. You need to know what you are talking about when appearing in legal situations, and dealing with legal professionals.

You need to know about statutes. Usually in a civil action you have only a year to file a lawsuit from the date of the offence. If after careful consideration you wish to start the legal process you may have to begin yourself. It is easier to find and retain legal re- presentation first, then leave it to your attorney to make sure these matters are dealt with correctly. If you let pass the statute of limitations, you've also let pass the opportunity to file a lawsuit.

It's a sad fact that ignorant people do not win court battles even with a good attorney.
