About the Date:

  • Dates are grown in Iraq, Arabia, North Africa west to Morroco, and Southern California.
  • Dates are harvested at different times, depending on where they are grown. While harvesting in the northern hemisphere takes place at the end of summer and in the fall, starting at the end of July, in the southern hemisphere harvesting takes place in February, March and April.
  • Dates are picked and marketed at three stages of their development: Khalal (hard and crisp, bright yellow or red), Rutab (partially browned, fibres softened), and Tamar (Amber to dark brown in color, soft pliable to firm to hard).

The Benefits of the Date:

  • 1: The invert sugar in dates is immediately absorbed by the body without going through the digestion that sugar normally undergoes.
  • 2: Dates have a very low sodium and fat content.
  • 3: Dates are a good source of iron, potassium, and calcium.

Other uses for the Date:

Date seeds are soaked and ground up for animal feed, and their oil is suitable for use in soap and cosmetics. The seeds are burned to make charcoal for silversmiths, as well as ground and used like coffe beans, or as an additive to coffee.
