About the Durian:
- The Durian fruit is grown in many places: Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines, Florida, Hawaii, and Northern Australia, just to name a few.
- The season for the Durian depends on the area in which it is grown. For example, in areas near the equator, trees will typically bear twice a year, peaking in June and December. In tropical areas farther than 10 degrees north or south of the equator, the season is mid-summer to autumn.
- For some, the Durian is ripe and ready to eat when its husk begins to crack. The ideal stage of ripeness to be enjoyed varies from region to region and species to species.
The Benefits of the Durian:
- 1: Durian fruit contains a high amount of sugar, vitamin C, and potassium.
- 2: The durian is also a good source of carbohydrates, protiens, and fats.
- 3: Medicinally, in Southeast Asia, parasitic worms are said to be expelled by eating durian; fevers are said to be reduced by drinking a tea of the leaves and roots, or applying durian leaf juice to the head.
Other uses of the Durian:In Malaysia, a decoction of the leaves and roots used to be prescribed as an antipyretic. The rinds can be dried and burned as fuel, and silk is sometimes bleached with the resulting ash in Southeast Asia. The ash is also reportedly beneficially ingensted by women following childbirth.
