ROUND 22
Saturday 6th of August.

SOUTH 1.3 8.6 12.9 21.13 (139)
GLENELG 4.0 7.2 12.4 14.7 (91)

In a pattern that is starting to become familiar, a desperate Glenelg fought hard to be in the game at three-quarter time, and then capitulated in the final quarter.
A brawl ensued after the three-quarter time siren, as spectators spilled onto the ground. At least a minute after the siren, the umpire saw fit to award a free to South about 50 metres out from goal. This enraged Glenelg players, supporters and officials and some minor scuffles broke out between spectators as they waited for South's Draper to take his kick. He missed, and Glenelg coach McGuiness quickly called his players into a huddle where the controversial free kick had been paid, in an attempt to gain some motivation from the incident. The unusual circumstances at three-quarter time had drawn more spectators than normal onto the ground and the Glenelg huddle was charged as hundreds of fans yelled their support. One expected the players to be totally pumped for the final term, but it wasn't to be. South scored the first then Tipumantamerri scored an inspirational goal on the run, after carrying the ball for 40 metres and kicking from 50. But, in what was a major disappointment, his team mates were not inspired and Glenelg folded dismally, with South kicking 8 goals to 1 in the remainder of the quarter.
Glenelg must now beat Central at Elizabeth next week to avoid the wooden spoon.

South blitz keeps it in finals hunt..

By David Valente.
South Adelaide battled hard for three quarters against a swithched on Glenelg before launching a last-term blitz to turn a day of pride into one of misery for the struggling Tigers.
The margin at the last break was only five points and Glenelg had the chance to deny South a chance at the finals, drag themselves of the bottom of the ladder, and win the Darley-Carey cup for the match that honored the greats of the two clubs.
But none of that was to be.
South charged into the final quarter, taking the game by the throat, while the Tigers all but lay downand surrendered. The Panthers kicked nine goals to two to turn a neck and neck battle into a 48-point thumping.
Bays coach Tony McGuinness was thrilled at three-quarter time and furious after the match.
"Nine goals to two in the last quarter. They were playing to make the finals, but we were playing to get off the bottom," he said.
"Today we were five points down at the last change and got blown out of the water. You have to question how much we want it. At some stage you have to say 'I am coming on as a player and I'm going to make a difference today'," McGuinness said.
The Bays led well at quarter time with four goals to one, despite South having much more use of the ball.
The Panthers simply any penetration into goal-scoring range with big men Matthew Golding, Cameron Venables and Damien Gigney prowling the backlines. Greg Anderson demanded more accountability from the Panthers at quarter time and they delivered.
Jon Hassal had a huge second term before being tagged out of the game in the second half by Craig Robertson, who returned to league ranks for the first time since 1998.
Dean Talbot was brilliant running out of defence, Trent Mills used his sure hands and Shane Ellen, Clint Draper and Dean Brogan came the clear forward targets they lacked in the opening term.
But Glenelg were not to be swept aside...yet. With James Byrne gathering prolific quality possessions on the wing, Matthew Bode continuing his dangerous form around the packs and in front of goals, and Golding still proving his defensive worth despite being beaten in the ruck by Crawshaw, it stayed within sight of a morale boosting win.
After a series of scuffles at the three-quarter time siren - and a free kick to Clint Draper that he took swamped by hundreds of spectators - South emerged prepared to finish the game off with run, focus, strength and quality disposal, particularly in front of goal. It was an amazing turnaround, thrilling for South fans, heartbreaking for the Bays.
