LETHAL RICHO
BOOSTS WEST'S FORTUNES
By Paul Kermode.
The burly frame of West Adelaide full forward Adam
Richardson stood between Glenelg and its second win of
the season yesterday at Richmond Oval.
The Bloods defence held out Glenelg in a frantic finish
to secure an important 4 point victory, but it was their
full forward who set up the win with a brilliant burst in
the opening minutes of the second term.
After the Tigers held sway during the first term and
worked their way to a 13-point quarter time lead,
Richardson took over in the second.
He was too big and strong for 19-year old Craig
Tasborski, kicking 3.3 for the term and handing off a
certain goal to Matthew Connell after marking strongly in
the goal square.
Richardson's burst was the difference in a game which,
for the other three quarters, was tough and tight with
both sides struggling to get full rewards for their
efforts.
This was certainly true for the Tigers, who should have
been leading by more at quarter-time as they rode a
brilliant quarter from centreman Martin Mellody.
And Glenelg could not deliver the knockout punch in the
final term as it pressed bravely for victory and looked
to be finishing with greater running than the home side.
Richardson found a willing ally in Crows wingman Matt
Connell, who set up the bulk of his goals in that term.
But it was the poise of Dion Myles, playing in an
uncustomary role accross half-back, who provided the
drive for West from start to finish.
A dangerous forward who can let himself down in front of
goals, Myles was able to use his pace and reading of the
play to great advantage in the back half, and was a
steadying influence when his team was under the pump.
West coach Michael Taylor hopes his side can use
yesterday's win as a springboard for the rest of the
season.
"Being such a close game, they threw everything at
us, and both sides were playing, not for their season,
but pretty close to it," he said.
"Our blokes withstood that and it's a credit to them
the way they did that."
"We're 2-3 and that seems to be a big difference to
1-4. We've got to play Central next weekand we look
forward to it. Our record out there's not too bad."
Glenelg coach Tony McGuiness, whose side now faces the
daunting task of travelling to Alberton to take on a Port
Adelaide side smarting from its first loss of the season
a fortnight ago, was left lamenting his side's
"really poor" second quarter.
The Tigers gave away complete control in the first 16
minutes, as West turned an 11-point quarter time deficit
into a 22-point lead before Glenelg kicked its first
score of the term.
"It's certainly an improvement on the last three
weeks. I thought we worked a lot harder and used the ball
a lot better," he said.
