ROUND 23
Saturday 12th of
August.
CENTRAL 17.10
(112)
GLENELG 1.0 1.2 3.4 5.5 (35)
It's a long way to Elizabeth
from the Bay. More Tiger fans than normal made the
journey, hoping that their team would lift in order to
give their retiring captain a rousing send-off. It wasn't
to be, as Glenelg floundered and were totally out-classed
all day.
The high-light was Chiggy being chaired from the ground
to a standing reception, even the Central supporters
joined in.
Mercifully, the
season is finished, with only the under 19's contesting
the finals. They will play Norwood in the Elimination
final next weekend.
The match report is extracted from the"Sunday
Mail."
Sad ending for
Bay Captain
By Nikki Tugwell.
Glenelg offered little resistance yesterday as Central
District completed its finals preperation by strolling to
a 77-point victory at Elizabeth Oval.
Central meets Port next week in the qualifying final.
Glenelg finished a forgetable season on a disappointing
note - a less than fitting send-off for veteran captain
Nick Chigwidden, who made his last appearance in the
black and gold guernsey after almost 300 games.
Bulldogs Heath Hopgood, Quinton Graham, James and Chris
Gowans and Damian Hicks were the main instigators, while
the entire Central back line hardly put a foot wrong.
The result became a formality after the Bulldogs kicked
seven goals in the second quarter, while restricting
Glenelg to just two points.
"The main thing was to have the game plan in
place," Central coach Peter Jonas said.
"It probably didn't work as well as I wanted it to,
but at the end of the day, we reduced them to five goals
five, our defence was very good."
After a tight opening, Central broke an 18-minute
deadlock to score two quick goals through Kynan Ford and
Cris Gowans. Glenelg had the instant reply through its
standout player Michael Raidis, but one sensed the
momentum was mounting for the Dogs.
And it was. First Sam McArdle, and then two goals in two
minutes from David Lillico triggered the second quarter
avalanche.
Graham, Hopwood, Paul Geister and Damian Hicks formed a
brick wall in the defence and rebounded straight down the
centre.
For Glenelg, Paul Sherwood tagged Daniel Healy into
mediocracy before half-time - at that stage keeping his
talanted opponent to just one kick.
Sherwood also provided run at both ends with good support
from Raidis who worked hard for four quarters.
Lillico for Central continued to find himself free in the
open spaces, while the Gowans brothers were instrumental
in helping to establish a match-winning 57-point
half-time lead.
In the third quarter, Glenelg tried flooding Central's
forward line, but that did not bother the Dogs,
particularly McArdle who plucked a well-judged mark from
a mass pack.
McArdle converted, quashing any thoughts of a
Lazarus-like comeback.
Ben McEntee did provide a focal point up forward for
Glenelg, re-entering the game from the bench.
So did Matthew Bode whose solo burst through half-forward
that carried the ball almost 80 metres was one of the
Tigers' rare highlights.
Despite taking its foot of the accelerator, Central still
enjoyed a 63 point advantage at three-quarter time and
extended that lead by 14 points in the last term.
"We had a bad day, but the boys were still out there
trying their hardest,"Chigwidden said.
"Central is a good team and that second quarter was
really the difference."
