What is Hair? How Does Hair Grow?

What is hair?

According to the Webster's dictionary, hair is any of the fine, threadlike outgrowths from the skin of an animal or human being. Hair is composed of keratin, grows within the hair follicle located under the scalp. Blood vessels surrounding the hair follicle provide the root with nourishment.

100,000 to 150,000.

What is hair follicle?

A hair follicle is a cavity of cells that forms a "bulb" around the base of the hair in the scalp. 

How does hair grow?

A healthy follicle produces a strong, thick, colored hair at an average daily rate of approximately 0.35mm(1/72 inch), that is, about 2.5cm(1 inch) every 21/2 months.

Hair growth follows a repeating, three-phase cycle: the anagen (active), catagen (intervening) and telogen (resting) phases.
