Notes

Sebra's bible gives the spelling of the name as Hazleton. Sebra was born in Canada. Little is known of his life from the time he left Canada and came to the U.S. in the year 1863. Sometime during that time he went to the west coast. It is said that during the Civil War he hauled freight to Santa Fe, N.M. and Denver, Colorado by team, pos sibly from St. Joseph, Missouri. He married Martha A. Davis in 1863, in Clarke County, Iowa. They had three children. Martha died of hemorrhage in 1868. In 1869, Sebra married Rachel Jane Keeran. They farmed in Clarke County, Iowa. About 1875, the family moved to Page County, Iowa and farmed near Coin, Iowa. Evidently they rented land here as I find no record of them buying any. On March 12, 1901, Sebra purchased 40 acres of land from Samuel Beveridge for $1800 - described as the NW/4 of the SE/4, Section 10, Harlan Twp., Page County, Iowa, and lying about 2-1/2 miles south and west of the town of Clarinda. On March 2, 1909, he sold this same land to Edmund Fleming for $3500. Sebra and Rachel lived in Shambaugh, Iowa at one time. After they broke up housekeeping in their later years, they stayed with the children. After Sebra's death, Rachel stayed with her children in Iowa for a while and spent the last months of her life with her daughter, Flo, in Wyoming. Sebra is buried in College Springs, Iowa cemetery. Rachel helped raise Melissa and William Hazleton and she and Sebra had 9 children of their own, six of them growing to adulthood. Sebra was known as S.B. Hazleton.
