Around 1900, John and Melissa left Page County, Iowa and went to the Endicott, Nebraska area where they had bought a farm, sight unseen. It was supposed to be improved, but when they arrived, they found out they had been cheated and there wasn't a building on the farm. A little later, they moved on to the Mahaska area where they farmed unt il John's health failed. He later worked at the lumber yard in Reynolds, Nebraska. Melissa is buried in the Mahaska, Kansas cemetery.
