I have lived in Houston off and on since January, 1985. I moved here when I was a sophomore in high school from Kankakee, Illinois. Quite a switch! Houston is the 4th largest city in the nation, yet it seems like the city that everyone forgot about! Think about it - when you name major cities in the United States, how long does it take you to get to Houston? When I moved here it was said that Houston had half of the population of Chicago in twice the area. It suffers from urban sprawl - but you get used to it. Only in Houston would you think of 35 miles as close. Only in Texas would you think of a 3 hour drive as short. I have friends from New England who think I am crazy for thinking that way. (Of course, I found it strange to go from one end of a state to another in just over 2 hours!) I left Houston for college after high school graduation to attend Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas; for a 4 month excursion to Fayetteville, North Carolina (Home of Ft. Bragg); for Killeen, Texas (Ft. Hood) and then Illesheim, Germany after I was married; and then back to Houston as I got divorced. So here I am! It isn't the "prettiest" city in the world - no mountains or hills, and while part of the city was once pine forest, the other side of town was a marsh. And the Convention & Visitors Bureau isn't telling much of a tall tale when it claims that Houston is the air-conditioning capital of the world! It is an ecclectic city, and it has something to offer everyone! I work in downtown, which is under quite a renovation. They are tearing up a lot of the streets by my office building in order to build a new baseball stadium for the Houston Astros. (And no, I don't miss the Oilers) They are also renovating old buildings and turning them into loft apartments with the hope that some people will move back into downtown. Houston seems to have the only downtown that shuts down at dark - but that is changing! I think it is really great - Houston needs a lift!
