Formed in Arizona but based in California, Condello's Phase One album has some interesting moments. Their Makes A Comeback EP included Soggy Cereal, (which has become rather well-known by virtue of its inclusion on Pebbles, Vol. 3, and Sonic Boom, a Hendrix-influenced blast (compiled on Brainshadows Vol. 2 CD). Mike Condello later joined Elton Duck, a LA-based late seventies/early eighties new wave trio, and then recorded a solo LP in 1984. Bill Spooner ended up in The Tubes and Dennis Kenmore joined Pollution, a late sixties/early seventies jazz-influenced lock band. Condello also produced an album for Warren S Richardson, which may be a Bill Spooner solo project. Much of Condello's material is collected on the CD Wallace And Ladmo's Greatest Hits. Brainshadows Vol. 2 CD also features The Time Machine, a rather catchy number by Commodore Condello's Salt River Navy Band. Guitarist and vocalist Vicki Peterson penned most of the '60s and early '70s guitar-rock songs, like the mini-hit "Hero Takes a Fall" (it was rumored the hero in the title was Dream Syndicate's Steve Wynn). The record also includes covers of the obscure Merry Go Round hit "Live" and ex- Soft Boy Kimberley Rew's "Going Down to Liverpool." The band was polished a bit by producer David Kahne and the release capitalized on the pretty, all-girl-group angle rather than the band's actual raw talent, which might otherwise have been too rough and retro for radio at the time. Nonetheless, the band retained enough of the original spunk that made them appealing in the first place. - Denise Sullivan 1. Hero Takes a Fall (Hoffs/Peterson) 2. Live (Rhodes) 3.
