Singapore is a small island with a population of about 4 million people living on an area of approximately 966 square kilometres. This works out to about 4140 people per square kilometres (comparing to Australia which has only 2 people per square kilometres!). So how does a tiny island like Singapore going to accomodate so many people ? Yes, we have to build castles in the sky! and this is where HDB comes in.
 The Housing and Development Board (HDB) is a statutory board of the Ministry of National Development.
It plans and develops affordable, quality public housing and related facilities and plays a vital role
in the nation building of Singapore. With the financial and legislative support from the government,
kampongs (villages), squatters and slum areas were cleared and HDB flats were built.
All HDB housing estates in Singapore were well planned and built with all necessary
infrastructures (town centre, children's playgrounds, swimming pool, shops, markets, cinemas, library,
school and light industries to provide employment for residents) with transportation and
commercial facilities to serve residents. In 1991, HDB won the World Habitat Award for the planning and development of Tampines Town.
Today, about 85 percent of Singaporeans live in HDB flats compared with only nine percent in 1960 when HDB was first established.
