Hot and humid all year round, average temperature is 28 - 32 degrees Celsius during the day and 23 - 27 degrees Celsius in the evening. So cotton T-shirt, Bermudas/shorts and sandals are commonly worn. A collared shirt and pants will do for usual formal occasions unless stated otherwise.

Singapore notes come in denominations of S$2, S$5, S$10, S$20, S$50, S$100, S$500, S$1,000, and S$10,000 and coins in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and S$1.

There are many licensed moneychangers around Singapore offering better exchange rate than most banks. Travellers’ cheques are accepted but proof of identity (passport) is required.

Credit cards are widely accepted in most restaurants and major departmental stores. However, not all places accept them. So you will need to carry some cash with you.

Most ATMs in Singapore accept credit cards and most are on the Plus, Cirrus, and Maestro international networks. You should not have any problem looking for one either as they can be found all over Singapore.

Tipping is not practiced in Singapore as a 10% service charge is already included in the bill.

GST has increased to 5% from 2004. Minimum sum requirement for tax refund is S$100. Receipts of less than S$100 from different shops participating in the tax refund scheme can be pooled to meet the minimum sum requirement. Tax refund is only applicable to tourists leaving Singapore by air via Changi Airport.

Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world with very low crime rate. You could walk around in the middle of the night in the city. However, do take note that low crime does not mean no crime.

Smoking is prohibited in public service vehicles, museums, libraries, lifts, theatres, cinemas, air-conditioned restaurants, hair salons, supermarkets, department stores and government offices. Offenders can be fined up to SGD 1,000. While it is an offence to smoke in air-conditioned eating places, smoking is permitted in air-conditioned pubs, discos, karaoke bars and nightspots.

Spitting/littering/failure to flush the toilet in public places/public toilet is an offence.

Water is safe to be drank straight from the tap.

Telephones accept mostly a phone card of the telephone company owning the phone. Coin phones are less prevalent these days. Buy a SingTel telephone card as SingTel public telephones are most prevalent. Domestic public telephone calls to fixed line or mobile phone numbers is a standard S$0.10 for the first 3 minutes. Domestic public telephone calls from pay phones within Changi Airport (between Immigration and the boarding gates) are free.
