The Follow Through

After impact the momentum of the swing will carry the body, arms, and hands towards the target. If all the fundamentals of the swing up to hitting the ball have been carried out correctly, you can do nothing else but follow through correctly.

Some leading players concentrate on pointing their tummy at the hole on the follow through, this is a common factor.

At impact the follow through begins. The right arm straightens out shortly after and the force of the swing brings the hands out and up. Try to swing so that the clubhead "follows" the ball as long as possible. All the weight should be on the outside of the left foot and the player should finish well up on the right toe, well balanced with his head turned to follow the flight of the ball. The position of the shoulders will be at 45 degrees to the target.

Throughout this golf lesson I have tried to describe by illustration and word the complete full golf swing, carried out with a driver or long iron. With the exception of short shots to the green this full swing applies to every club in the bag. It is only the length of the shaft and the repositioning of the ball in relation to the feet that changes any shot.

All thinking should be done on the practice fairway, practise by hitting balls with each club progressively. Starting off with the No 9 iron, concentrate on what you are trying to accomplish and move up the clubs by hitting a few balls with a No 8 then 7, gradually using the clubs with longer shafts. With this the arc of the swing is gradually lengthened until you are practising with the driver and the arc of your swing is at its greatest.
