Duffy’s Cove and Chris’s Corner
435 Hamilton Road

Duffy’s celebrates their thirteenth anniversary this winter, I’m sitting in my favourite spot surrounded by rocks imported all the way from Italy in the 50’s. I often sit here wondering how much work it would be, gathering, shipping and installing all those rocks! The atmosphere they create is hard to describe. I have more than one favourite spot in this place and each one has memories for me. My fiancé, Corinne introduced me to this spot about 5 years ago and it’s one of our regular restaurants. I must admit I discovered Chris’s Corner on my own, introducing myself to the regulars on my first night living on Hamilton Road! It’s a great neighbourhood pub and, thanks to the central kitchen, where else can you get steak and fresh mushrooms after midnight?

Often, if you’re dining at Duffy’s, a distinguished gentleman will come over to your table and ask how everything is. This is Steve, the Maitre ‘di. He’s as permanent a fixture here as the rocks. Some Londoners will know him from The Wortley Road House which was Steve’s Restaurant from 1977 to 1992. His background is quite interesting and colourful. Especially since he spent his years in Greece as a Photographer! Chris tells me his dad photographed hundreds of weddings in this city and not for monetary reasons. (I can relate to that). Spending some 20 years as a photographer, he’s such a people person, Chris agrees, he says his dad is a great host, second to none. Although he is close to retirement I’ve seen Steve slingin’ beers at Chris’s Corner last call on a Saturday night, giving me a new respect for this interesting man. Some of you have noticed, at the HRABA meetings, when Steve stands up to talk, everyone listens, he likes to share his stories and opinions and they’re always fascinating and poignant.

Chris’s background is also quite interesting. His love is real estate, owning and managing some of his first properties since he was 18 years old. Dedicated to his wife Tracy and two kids, he balances his time between Duffy’s Cove, Chris’s Corner and home. The hours and dedication required in this business can be grueling. Dedicated people are a necessity, loyal employees, friends, and professionals in their field like Chuck McDuff, who has worked for Chris since he owned The Velvet Restaurant in 1985 (Now owned by Peter and Mary Nouragas, who are also members of the HRABA). Also, Nawaf Moussa who worked at Steve’s restaurant for six years before coming to Duffy’s in ‘92. 3 employees have been there for over 8 years! What’s keeping them there? In my opinion, the Pasta and Italian sauces! Corinne says it’s got to be their famous seafood or their amazing House dressing. But Chris and Steve say it’s you, the customer! Chris expressed to me, his enthusiasm and thanks to Londoners, especially in the Hamilton road area, for 13 years of success! §
