Understanding Anne Sexton

I am a man, and the words, put down,
Sound like footsteps firmly planted;
Yes, I am a man, and yet
I understand Anne Sexton

I know her style, in a place
And in a way many may but few
will bother to...it is a place
Of washed-out laughter

And some of us have it
And some of us don't
Some never get the joke
That life really is

But Anne did
She checked in at the end
Of the roaring '20's
And checked out when she damn well pleased
