Successful banner advertising relies on good design and a clear understanding of marketing, as well as knowing the difference between traditional and new media. A good banner should consider the target audience, the placement, the content of the banner, the color, size, format of the banner, and other elements.

Example of Banner Design

According to Kenneth Dotson, A well-designed banner should employ the following seven rules:

  • Use color
  • Using animation which not slow the download of the ad can attract attention
  • Use keywords
  • Keep it simple
  • Keep it relevant
  • Include a call to action
  • Test

Banner Tips has published dozens of newsletters which make a series of comparisons between different kinds of banners. Each comparison uses a group of similar banners, and puts them on certain web sites to get an impression e.g. 10,000 or 20,000. The test checks how many CTRs each banner got and analyzes the results to see which element can contribute to the high CTR, and which can not.

You can read all about these comparisons in their back issues.
