In this section we take our weekly look at a web site that is a great example for Internet advertising. Sometimes these sites are about Internet advertising themselves, but often they are business web sites that have done a great job at selling their products and services. Sometimes the sites are both.
Our choice for the week of August 14, 2000:
JimWorld.
About the web site:
JimWorld is a totally free web site all about web site promotion: Their motto is: "Web site Promotion: It isn't just a job. It's an adventure!"
If you visit JimWorld, it is probably because you have a site that needs more traffic. Well, you've gone to the right place. JimWorld is a massive yet highly relevant compilation of tools and information for internet entrepreneurs, no matter what their level of experience.
There are tutorials starting right at the beginning called "How do I let people know about my so cool site that I've worked so hard on?" They have an assemble list of over 1000 pages on the web where you can leave your URL and they will send people to see you, for example. Overall, the mission of JimWorld is to help the novice web entrepreneurs increase traffic at their sites.
They have tutorials on how to manage the whole process of web site registration, as well as a collection of good Webmaster tips and tricks.
Contents of Site:
The JimWorld home page is absolutely packed with useful links and internet advertising tools. The page includes links to:
- The day's top internet news stories
- JimTools, a toolbox of excellent internet tools
- A Meta Search Engine that includes over 2 million site reviews
- An 'All About' section that has articles about various cool internet advertise techniques
- TipWorld, at page devoted to giving users a collection of advertising tips
- VirtualPromote – a JimWorld feature page that gets novices on the right path
There are also many other aspects to this web site. Entrepreneurs should study it themselves to get the full impact of JimWorld has to offer.
Ease of Navigation:
The site uses a white background and it puts all of the information into a 700 pixel column down the center of the page. That leaves some white space for anyone using resolutions higher that 800x600. Personally I like this effect, as it makes the text easier to read. All of the information is centred clearly in front of you.
JimWorld also attempts to keep each concept in a separate area of the page. For example, the 'All about section' is down one column on the left of the page. The effect is a good one because it helps the eye section off important features. Unfortunately, the home page has so much information on it that it may be difficult to read process nonetheless.
Currency and relevancy to Internet Advertising:
The site is very current, with updates on tools and features happening daily or at most weekly. The news section provides the latest news stories about internet advertising, and JimWorld even includes a Gazette newsletter which you can subscribe to for free. The relevancy of the material is quite good. Not everything offered at the site relates to internet advertising, but the vast majority of it does. You will not be wasting much time if you visit most sections of the site. The tools, tips, promotion page, and news stories, all help novice entrepreneurs achieve all of their ends.

In addition to the features mentioned so far, there are other excellent tools you can use on this site:
- Keyword Wizard – this is software you must download and install that lets you find out what people are actually searching for on the net, and which terms are used most. That will help entrepreneurs with meta-tags, search engine registration, and content of their site.
- Free Site Templates – if you are a new web site designer and you need good templates fast, JimWorld Links you to www.freetemplates.com, which will help you get started immediately.
- Road to High Traffic – this section walks you through steps that will help boost traffic on your web site.
- The information in some of these sections can be slightly redundant, but still relevant and worth re-reading if you have the time.
Best feature of site:
The site has its own built-in translator, and it shows you how you can have your own translator on your site. This is really a nice touch because it provides access to people all over the world. The whole site can be translated into Italian, German, Spanish, French, Norwegian, and Portuguese.
Overall Quality:
JimWorld has a few broken links, such as the 'keyhole' which lets you view people's web search queries as they type them. Other than that, though, this site is very high quality. The authoritativeness of most of the information is quite good, but do cross reference with other sites if you have the time. That rule is good for any web site. The content in JimWorld will help any entrepreneur, although it may be far too overwhelming for the beginner. A beginner would find a guide to Internet advertising more appropriate, but will certainly enjoy JimWorld once part the starting blocks. We highly recommend the site.
