Branson Sees Slight Decline in Tourism in 2000

 Overall visitors to Branson dropped by an estimated 140,000 in 2000 and the number of families and younger people fell significantly according to statistician Jerry Henry.

In site of this decline in visitors sales-tax revenue was up 4.8% with tourism-tax collections up 1.96%. Revenue was up for restaurants, hotels and attractions, but it fell below 1999 figures for theaters and campgrounds.

Visitor numbers slid from 7 million in 1999 to 6.86 million last season

The number of visitors ages 18-34 fell 30%.

First-time visitors dropped 16%.

Additional Growth Expected in Branson Meadows Area

 According to plans submitted to the city of Branson several new businesses will be built in Branson Meadows. (See related article at right regarding Convention/Expo Center.)

Mitchum Tire and Wheel of Springfield is already open at the location.

 Myer Hotels, owner of four Branson hotels is considering a fifth hotel.

 Forest Park is planning a 57-unit assisted living facility and Beverly Healthcare plans a nursing home.

Branson is Tied with New York as Top Destination

 The National Tour Association recently announced Branson was tied with New York City as its top-selling domestic destination in 2000.

The NTA is an organization comprised of tourism professionals from around the country. According to its high-ranking officials, the group is focused on development, promotion, and increased use of tour operator-packaged travel.

New Shopping Center Set for W. Hwy 76 Location

  A new shopping center is being constructed across from Wal-Mart on West Highway 76. The Vista Center will include several specialty shops.

Marriott Vacation Club Comes to Branson in 2000!

  Marriott International, Inc. will build a 400-unit time-share resort on land adjacent to the Presleys' Country Jubilee theater. HorisonsSM is the newest of the Marriott Vacation Club properties with this property featuring two-bedroom/two-bathroom units. Phase One is planned to begin this summer. The resort will include interactive amenities such as Horizons Harbour and Barefoot Bay, providing indoor and outdoor swimming experiences; Compass Kids Clubhouse; the Car Poll; and Function Junction, an outdoor pavilion for picnics and concerts.

Renovations Enhance Branson City Campground

  The Branson City Campground, one of the oldest in the area, is getting a make over that's improving its appeal to the modern RV traveler.

The 350-site campground, owned by the city since the 1950's, is right on the shores of Lake Taneycomo and close to downtown Branson. During the off-season the last two years, the city has been making major improvements for the convenience and enjoyment of campers.

Two of the five sections of the campground have had water and sewer lines upgraded, 50-amp electrical outlets installed for larger recreational vehicles, and local cable TV hookups. Similar improvements for the other three sections are in the works.

More Trees Are Planted at Branson PitchNPutt Course

 The city of Branson received a $2,300 check from the Conservation Department as partial reimbursement for recent tree planting activity at the city's Pitch N Putt golf course. By planting 14 trees, the city continues to beautify the landscape and to protect the trees already there.

Movies, Movies, Movies

 Branson may become the "movie capital of the Midwest" if recent announcements are any indication. ShoPro opened an 11-screen theatre at the Factory Shoppes at Branson Meadows during February 2000.

Ozarks IMAX Complex has announced the addition of a three-screen movie theatre to their property. Goodrich, maintaining their current four-screen theatre may also build a new seven-screen complex.

NAIA BB Tournament Returning For Two Years

 The College of the Ozarks will host the NAIA Division II Men's National Basketball Tournament for two more years. The 2001 tournament concluded recently with Northwestern College of Orange City, Iowa claiming the championship.

For those of you unfamiliar with College of the Ozarks (C of O) you owe yourself a visit to the campus on your next visit to Branson to see a model system for teaching values, hard work and self-reliance as well as literature, agriculture, communications etc.

The school was originally founded to provide education for children from the rural areas who could not afford to further their education. Students at C of O are required to work in one of the school's businesses to pay for their tuition and board.

Six Special Events Scheduled in Downtown Branson in 2001

 As reported in the annual report of the Downtown Branson Mainstreet Association (DBMSA) will be hosting six different events this year. They include Main Street Hoops Basketball Tournament, Plumb Nellie Days, The 50's and 60's Street Dance, The Old Time Fiddlers Contest, Autumn Daze Festival and Sidewalk Sale and Candlelight Christmas.

New Fire Station in Branson

 Fire Station #3 is now open at the corner of Green Mountain Drive and Keeter Street. A satellite police station is also included in the building.

And a New Parking Lot

 A one-acre "Park 'N Lot" is now open just north of Branson City Hall. The "Park 'N Lot" will provide an additional 60 parking spaces for City Hall visitors. The parking lot will be used for all visitors to the downtown area without cost when the spaces are available. This parking lot will feature a large copper sculpture of several trees. These trees will have water coming out of the top of them flowing down into a small pond according to David Miller, City Engineer.

Branson Is Named All Missouri Certified City

 The Missouri Department of Economic Development has designated Branson as an All Missouri Certified City. The city participated in a self-assessment process to identify strengths and weaknesses, then to build on its strong points and improve upon the weaknesses.

Branson Considers Monorail System

  Branson's future visitors could look down on cars and buses on the strip as they glide along a monorail if an upcoming transit study shows the numbers add up.

The Branson Board of Aldermen voted July 10 to move forward with a $450,000 federally funded study of a monorail system as a way to alleviate traffic congestion.

Site Selected for Branson Convention/Expo Center

  The City of Branson and Taney County, Missouri have taken a first step in building a convention and expo center for the "Live Entertainment Capital of the World" by selecting a location for the proposed property.

  A convention and expo committee selected a 40-acre tract of land in the city's Branson Meadows section. The property is situated along Gretna Road, one of Branson's newer ancillary roads, and is across from the entrance to the Factory Shoppes at Branson Meadows outlet mall.

  The next phase of the convention and expo project focuses on a thorough physical structure feasibility study. The committee will hire a consultant to determine the amount of use, physical features of the facility--size, layout, number of meeting rooms, auditorium and expo hall amenities, cost, and type of financing. Current funding opportunities will require no tax hikes.

  Estimates are to have the convention center completed by 2003.

Branson's Population Now Numbers Over 6,000!

  Branson's familiar "population 3,706" will be replaced with 6,050 according to figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

According to officials, Branson can now create a city charter and receive more federal and state funding.

Since 1990, the number of theaters in Branson has grown from 19 to 49, while the number of restaurants have increased from 179 to 361, according to information from the city. The number of lodging establishments in Branson nearly doubled from 110 in 1990 to 205 in 2000.

New Advertising Slogan

  The Branson Chamber of Commerce has adopted a new advertising slogan, "Real American Entertainment," which they hope will appeal to a younger audience.

City Earmarks Money for Study of Attractions

  A total of $60,000 has been earmarked for an assessment of the activities offered in Branson and how a different mix might help draw more people according to Branson City Administrator, Terry Dody.

The study will be conducted by Harrison Price, whose Palm Springs, California, firm has done feasibility studies for Disneyland, Disney World and other national attractions.

"The goal is to find out if we need to do something different," Dody said. "We'll look at the demographics of who comes to Branson and talk to the people who don't come to Branson. Do we need different types of attractions?"

Branson to Invest in Turn Lanes to Help Ease Traffic Flow

  In anticipation of ever-increasing numbers of visitors, Branson is ready to invest $4.2 million to make sure they don't get caught in traffic.

The money will be spent in 2001 to create new turning lanes at several intersections recommended during a recent traffic study.

Anglers Gain New Lake Taneycomo Access at Cooper Creek

  Anglers who take to the cold waters of Lake Taneycomo in pursuit of trout now have an additional access point just above Branson.

Cooper Creek Access, located on Lake Taneycomo's north shore, near Fall Creek Road opened in late May. This "state-of the-art fishing access" site is owned by Empire District Electric and was developed by the Missouri Department of Conservation.

 

Two Companies Now Provide Airport Shuttle Services to Springfield/Branson Airport

  Two companies now offer shuttle service between the Springfield/Branson Regional Airport and Branson.

A-OK Shuttle (417-334-8687) offers personalized shuttle services with a $20 charge each way. Branson Gray Line (417-334-5463) now offers three shuttles per day from the airport to Branson. Cost is $20 one-way and $38 round trip.

Branson Creek Golf Course Opens for Second Season

  Branson Creek Golf Club, designed by Tom Fazio and managed by Troon Golf, features a 7,000-yard championship-level, par 71 layout etched into the beautiful Ozark landscape. Other facilities slated at Branson Creek include resort hotels and timeshares, convention centers, retail stores, restaurants, theaters, other recreational attractions and a wide selection of housing. Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area Opens to the Public in 2000

  Branson's newest natural Park, the Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area opened to the public in September 1999. The 130 acres in the heart of the city was purchased from Dr. Lyle Owen, a retired college professor, who had bought the land in the early 1930's.

The city made minimal improvements to the Wilderness Area by adding a half-mile trail, constructing a scenic lookout platform and repairing the 340 stone steps originally built by Owen 62 years ago. These steps led from Owen's bluff-top cabin to what was then the White River and what is now Lake Taneycomo.

In addition to the trail, steps and scenic view of the Lake Taneycomo valley (see picture below), Lakeside Forest also features a natural waterfall and several caves.

Henning Conservation Area Is Annexed to Branson

 The 1,600 acre Ruth and Paul Henning Conservation Area was recently annexed into Branson and city officials say they plan to preserve a dream that began more than two decades ago.

The conservation department will continue to manage the park, said city officials. The Henning state park is just northwest of Branson and is nearly all covered with forest.

In the late 1960's, Beverly Hillbillies producer, Paul Henning filmed several show segments in Silver Dollar City. He was so impressed with the natural beauty of the area that he purchased the land, which he sold to the Conservation Department in 1981.

Branson Travel Information Program is Now Active; More Travel Notes

 TRIP, a free Travel and Recreation Information Program, was launched recently in Branson to help visitors make the most of existing roadways and to make travel easier for drivers.

It includes a web site, a radio network, electronic message boards, and information kiosks. Each is interwoven and can send or receive information from a traffic management center at the Branson City Hall.

To find the latest travel and weather info and data on attractions, lodging, etc. tap into TRIP at www.branson.tripusa.com/ Once in Branson, drivers can tune to Branson TRIP Radio at 1610 AM for the latest traffic & weather.

 For the seventh year in a row, Branson is the best all-around city for motorcoach travel and tours. The results of the survey were released in February.

 Travelers are looking for more diversity and hospitality on their vacations and many are finding it in Branson, according to the seventh annual "Best & the Rest" survey conducted by American Bus Association members.
