Key Links: Magnetic Fields' genius Stephin Merritt also fronts The Future Bible Heroes, The Gothic Archies and The Sixths. The Sixths' "Wasps Nests" (1995) is the best of Merritt's non-Magnetic Fields releases.
Mazzy Star
Key Works: "She Hangs Brightly" (1990); "So Tonight That I Might See" (1993); "Among My Swan" (1996).
Key Links: Mazzy Star's David Roback was also a key member of the 80's neo-psychedelic group Rain Parade. Their best release was " Emergency Third Rail Power Trip".
Mercury Rev
Key Works: "Boces" (1993); "Deserter's Songs" (1998).
Key Links: Mercury Rev lead singer Jonathan Donahue is a former member of The Flaming Lips.
Neutral Milk Hotel
Key Works: "On Avery Island" (1996); "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" (1998).
Key Links: Members of Neutral Milk Hotel have also contributed to albums by The Olivia Tremor Control, The Music Tapes, The Gerbils and the now-defunct Chocolate U.S.A. NMH leader Jeff Mangum released a live solo album in 2001 called "Live at Jittery Joe's".

Key Links: Ex-Of Montreal bassist Bryan Helium is now a member of Elf Power. Of Montreal's Derek Almstead and Dottie Alexander are also members of the Summer Hymns who released their nice debut "Voice, Brother & Sister" in 2000.
Olivia Tremor Control, The
Key Works: "Music from the Unrealized Script, Dusk at Cubist Castle" (1996); "Black Foliage: Animation Music, Volume One" (1999).
Key Links: Members of The Olivia Tremor Control have been a part of or helped out with Neutral Milk Hotel, The Gerbils, Chocolate U.S.A. and The Apples in Stereo. OTC drummer Eric Harris' side-project, Frosted Ambassador, spawned a self-titled debut album in 1999. Key OTC member Bill Doss formed The Sunshine Fix and released the shimmering EP "A Future History of a Sunshine Fix" in 2000 (the debut album "Age of the Sun" was released in early 2002). The other key OTC member, Will Hart, formed Circulatory System and they released their beautifully psychedelic self-titled debut in 2001.
Outrageous Cherry

Key Links: The Cherry's front-man Matthew Smith is also a member of roots-rock outfit The Volebeats.
Palace / Will Oldham

Key Links: Will Oldham has recorded under the aliases Palace, Palace Brothers, Palace Music, Palace Songs, Will Oldham and Bonnie "Prince" Billy.
Papas Fritas

Pavement
Key Works: "Slanted and Enchanted" (1992); "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" (1994); "Brighten the Corners" (1997).
Key Links: Pavement leader Stephen Malkmus also helped out buddy Dave Berman on a couple of Silver Jews records and has now established a solo career with his excellent self-titled debut.
Pernice Brothers, The
Key Works: "Overcome by Happiness" (1998).
Key Links: PB front-man Joe Pernice was also the leader of the accomplished country-rock outfit The Scud Mountain Boys who released the excellent "Massachusetts" in 1996. Joe also led Chappaquiddick Skyline to one lovely self-titled album which was released in late 1999.

Prine, John

Quasi

Key Links: Quasi's Janet Weiss was the Go-Betweens drummer on "The Friends of Rachel Worth" (2000). Sam Coomes also helped out on keyboards.
Red House Painters

Key Links: RHP's leader Mark Kozelek released a solo album of folk-inflected AC/DC covers in 2001.

Key Links: Michael is also one-half of the power pop duo Cheeky Monkey. The other half of Cheeky Monkey is Francis McDonald. Francis is a core member of The BMX Bandits, The Radio Sweethearts, Speedboat and now drums for Teenage Fanclub. Francis also runs the incredibly good-tasting Shoeshine record label. Talk about eight days a week!

Current drummer Francis McDonald is also a member of Cheeky Monkey, The BMX Bandits, The Radio Sweethearts and Speedboat. Among other credits, the Fannies backed Frank Black on a John Peel EP in 1994 and paired-up with Jad Fair on the album "Words of Wisdom and Hope" in 2002.
Uncle Tupelo

Key Links: Uncle Tupelo's Jay Farrar went on to form Son Volt. Jeff Tweedy formed Wilco and is also a member of Golden Smog. Jeff also worked with Billy Bragg on the "Mermaid Avenue" records.

Vaughn, Ben

Velvet Crush

Key Links: Crush's drummer Ric Menck released some nice singles in the late 80's/early 90's and they were compiled on his 1997 release "The Ballad of Ric Menck". Fellow-Crusher Paul Chastain also released some nice singles (with Ric Menck) in the late 80's and these were compiled on "Hey Wimpus: The Early Recordings of Paul Chastain and Ric Menck" (1998). Former Velvet Crusher Jeffrey Underhill was also a key member of pop outfit Honeybunch. Honeybunch's best work is captured on the compilation "Time Trials: 1987-1995" (1996).
Volebeats, The

Key Links: Volebeater Matthew Smith is also the mastermind behind the retro-outfit Outrageous Cherry.
