Summer Rolls AlongIf you're just like me, you're looking at yourself in the mirror and wondering where the whole summer disappeared to. This summer has definitely been quick and brisk for me. Strange wonder, then, that I am only two weeks away from the start of classes. The summer practicum (practice work) is all done and I've had some time to take a break and enjoy the summer. Let's recap. Just before my highly anticpated three week break between my practicum and classes, there was December in August. For the first week of August it rained and rained and rained. Very strange for this time of year in Vancouver. Late July and early August are supposed to be the hottest and driest days of the year. The bad weather took its toll on me and I was "under the weather." After many bowls of "bitter tea" (i.e. Chinese herbal medicine), I was feeling better, but still coughing. However, the sun had started to shine. Now it was truly August. In fact, it was some of the hottest days that Vancouver has ever seen. This city went from cool and rainy to hot and humid. It was a very strange two weeks. To pass the time, I got to enjoy a few activities. One weekend, I went on an urban hike. I walked from a downtown apartment near Coal Harbour and walked all the way to English Bay. Then from there, my friends and I trekked on into parts of Stanley Park before finally making our way back to the apartment. It's a walk that took us through the heart of downtown shopping, to the best beach in the city, and through parts of a wonderful urban park. That same weekend, I went to something called "Bard on the Beach." Many literary people refer to Shakespeare as "the Bard." So I went to watch a Shakespeare play on the beach. (Well, actually, we were in a tent in a park. It wasn't really a beach. But Bard and beach have better alliteration. ^_^ ) I watched the comedy, "The Taming of the Shrew." It was hilarious. I was actually surprised how much of the older English I could understand. From my past experience with reading Shakespeare, it is very difficult to understand. But when they were talking the words and acting out everything, even some of the old jokes started to make sense. Shakespeare was definitely meant more to be watched in a theatre rather than to be read in a book. I look around me at this moment and I find myself wondering where some of my friends have gone. Earlier, one friend had a "special friend" in town and I didn't see him. Another friend took off for Asia last week and won't be back for another week or so. I have yet another friend also going to Asia for vacation for one week. People are disappearing on me rapidly. I also find myself eagerly waiting their return. But by that time, the summer will be over and I'll be back in classes. In any case, it is my hope that you are enjoying your summer while it lasts. If you're like me, I'm bad at starting new things, but I'm slowly trying to change that. While the summer is still here, I need to carpe diem (seize the day). Take care. |
