The T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter is under the Administration of Parks and Recreation, a Department of the City of Manhattan. The shelter was housed in the Sunset Zoo in Manhattan, until the construction of a new facility was completed on our present site in 1988. The facility could only house 20 dogs and about 24 cats. In 1990, it became obvious the shelter was not large enough to meet the demands of stray animals in our area.

Consequently, in 1997 a Shelter Expansion Committee was formed and after several set backs the new renovated shelter began operating in the Spring of 2000. Renovation was completed in January of 2001, with 54 dog kennels and over 60 cat cages. The shelter is staffed with professional animal care professionals and is large enough to provide an extended period of time the animals can be sheltered.
