Budućnost and Crvena zvezda win Yugoslav championships!

Two surprises happened at the end of YU volleyball season 2001/2002. Budućnost from Podgorica defeated last season's champion Budvanska rivijera by 3:1 in victories and won its first title ever.
Even bigger surprise happened in female competition. Young team of Crvena Zvezda (Red Star), mainly led by Krdžić, Spasojević and Đerisilo, won its 21st title, yet only first from season 1992/'93. defeating Jedinstvo from Užice by also 3:1 in victories. This year Jedinstvo lost 3 final matches: national cup, Top Teams Cup and this one, thus losing the title after 8 consecutive years of ruling Yugoslav female volleyball.

Italian Lube Maceratta (featuring Yugoslavs Miljković and Gerić) became European champion defeating Greek Iraklis (featuring Vasa Mijić) by 3:1! The third in Europe is, Greek again, Olympiakos.

Jedinstvo Užice second in Top Teams Cup!

Yugoslav best female team in last 10 years and also current champion - Jedinstvo from Užice made the greatest success in Yugoslav female volleyball: in Top Teams Cup final-four, played 9th and 10th March, it lost by 3:0 against host team from Baku, Azerbaijan!
    Congratulations, ladies! :-)

Budvanska rivijera won its first Yugoslav cup trophy, at home, in Mediteran sports center in Budva. More info here...

Cuba won the Grand Winners Cup (to some also known as World Cup) without a loss! Brazil managed to clinch the 2nd place and win $250,000 since Yugoslavia managed to lose vs. South Korea :-(  Cuba won $400,000, and 3rd-placed Yugoslavia won $200,000 (which isn't that bad after all ;-)).

Vladimir Grbić, player of Piaggio Roma and golden Yugoslav national team is officially the Best European Player in 2000! This is the second BEP title out of four that was achieved by Yugoslav players. Before Vanja, his brother, Nikola Grbić, won the first one in 1997.

Yugoslavia wins the Olympic!!!

In spite of whole-country general strike due to elections stealing in Yugoslavia, I decided to write this because I felt this was the greatest news that could be written on this page.

At last Yugoslavia managed to get a gold medal!! After two losses in the beginning, YU team won 6 consecutive matches by 3:0, 3:1, 3:1 (in the preliminary group), 3:2 vs. Holland (with 17:15 in tie-break!), 3:0 against world champion Italy in the semifinals and finally, with the greatest play ever seen on the tournament, 3:0 (25:22, 25:22, 25:20) vs. Russia.
So, after WC silver, two EC bronzes and one silver, Olympic bronze from Atlanta and one World Cup silver, long expected gold arrived around the necks of these great players led by Zoran Gajić and Bogdan Sretenović:

Vladimir Batez, Slobodan Kovač, Slobodan Boškan, Đula Mešter, Vasa Mijić, Nikola Grbić, Vladimir Grbić, Andrija Gerić, Goran Vujević, Ivan Miljković, Veljko Petković and Goran Vušurović.

Here are the complete standings of the Olympic tournament:
        1. YUGOSLAVIA

2. Russia
        3. Italy

4. Argentina
        5. Holland
        6. Brazil
        7. Cuba
        8. Australia
