WHAT'S NEW WITH
MATTHEW?
Well gang, I've
been getting more and more hits lately. So I figured in order to get you
people coming back for more, I thought I'd add a little personal info
section here. Anytime I update the page I'll give you some quick thoughts.
If there are no objections, the examination will commence. I hope you
brought your number two pencils. By the way, when's the last time you
saw a number four pencil? And exactly how many numbers are there? Oh well...
December 13th, 2003:With Slush Factory moving on to bigger and better things, by merging with site UGO.com, film review work sorta dried up there, so I've moved over to a brand new site, Pop Thought. I've started a new section of my writing archive for these reviews (there are two so far), and hopefully I'll have a good long run at this place. I tell ya, I run these websites into the ground. I've lost count at how many different ones I've worked on in the last couple years.
October 27th, 2003:The pictures page is updated with three shots from last weekend's Stash Bash 2, and feature me and some of my fellow Movie Poop Shoot columnists with Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes. It was a cool time, and I even spoke to a few people who read and liked my column. Always good to feel you're not working in a vacuum. The good movie of the moment to rent is Out of the Past (1947). The bad movie of the moment to rent is Reptilicus (1962).
September 23rd, 2003: All right you yahoos, if you're in the mood for something different, go here, and check out my very first celebrity interview piece, a roundtable discussion with Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, aka The Folksmen, aka Spinal Tap. It was a little intimidating for a first interview, but it went pretty well (admittedly, many of the questions asked were asked by others in a roundtable, junket-like setting, but I edited the piece damnit!!). NYC'ers you've only got 2 days to go before BUBBA HO-TEP so get psyched! Your music to mope to currently is Longwave's "Tidal Wave.
August 27th, 2003:So I'm at NYU, in a great apartment in a great location who's only negative is that all my neighbors seem to be 60 year old women. Also, no phone, no web access from the apartment for the moment, which is excrutiating agony. Must...get...online!!! Movie of the moment is totally American Splendor."
August 12th, 2003:Since I'm constantly updates the "Writing" page, I always forget to update this space. With NYU drawing closer every day, I'm considering turning this into one of those blog-type deals that the kids today are so into. Of course, no one reads it and it'd just be for me, but what the hell.
June 17th, 2003: I rewrote the front page here because, let's face it, it was getting pretty dated, and my silly little jokes tend to get old after the eighth or ninth time you read them. So that's all new and I'm planning to update some of my other pages to reflect my current state (i.e. rearranging my writing page so the old stuff is shuffled to the bottom). The soundtrack to this rennovation was The Jawhawks' 'Rainy Day Music.'
May 1st, 2003: For the first time in a while, I added a new Mix Tape (Really a mix CD, but that's not important) to that page. If you're curious what I'm listening to right now, that's the place to check out. And only one more day until X2!!
March 1st, 2003: Lookee at the hits! What's wrong with you people? There's nothing to see here; I took the nudes off months ago! As I said previously, the column indexes are now being kept extremely up-to-date, we're talking Slush Factory, GBU, the works. There looks to be increased From The Wire and comic reviews in the future too. I am really focused on the writing lately, even if I'm not that good yet, I have this crazy notion that with enough practice I might actually improve. That, and what else have I got to do right now? That's right, absolutely nothing. Your difficult-to-find rental of the moment is FASTER PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL! and your insanely-hilarious comedy CD of the moment is Dave Attell's "Skanks For The Memories."
February 4th, 2003: I'm rather ashamed; for the first time I lost the text from the update when transferring it from the main page to this archive. So this is not what was originally written on the front page on February 4th, this is just plain garbage. Who knows what amazing and remarkably fantastic discoveries could have been hidden within that text, now lost forever. What a shame.
January 12th, 2003: The first udpate of 2003, and if you head over to the writing page you'll find the GBU archive completely up to date and an archive started for The Slush Factory, which was tough since Slush now has a beautiful redesign and some of the old content has yet to be archived. But Google provided the way and the light. And I even found some links to my reviews on some other sites! Schweeeeet. Please spend this cold month in a warm movie theater catching up on those Oscar-bait movies. This year they were really excellent. CD of the moment is Rhett Miller's The Instigator
November 21st, 2002:The archives for GBU and FTW have been updated, so head over to the writing page and check out the new stuff. Also, my current reviews have returned! Today, I posted a brand-new review of P.T. Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love on The Slush Factory, a website that's got movies and comics and lots of good stuff. Great site, and I'm very happy to be there. So hit 'em up and give 'em some bidness. Currently I'm spending most of my free time doing the following: writing, GREs, Tony Hawk 4, writing, GREs, movies, GREs, writing, Tony Hawk 4, stealing candy from babies, writing, GREs, movies, etc.
October 1st, 2002: As if I have to tell you, the site redesign is finally up, after massive procrastination from yours truly. This redesign is by Christopher Butcher, comic book colorist, and editor. You can see his site at 212.net. If you see any problems, please email me and let me know. As Spinal Tap would say, I hope you enjoy our new direction.
September 12th, 2002:
The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly list has been updated to reflect all my hard,
biweekly work. The column seems to be doing well, I still get about ten emails
an installment in feedback, and I've been invited to attend a film festival or
two. All in all, it's a good gig. Grayhaven, where I've been doing my current
movie reviews, is eliminating that feature, so I'm currently in the midst of a job
search for a new home. I've got a few prospects, but worse comes to worse, I'll
be back posting them on the IMDb. There isn't too much in theaters to recommend
right now, but be sure to catch the premiere of The Sopranos this Sunday evening.
August 10th, 2002: Don't think that because the website hasn't been
updated that I haven't been busy. "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly" is now a
regular, paying gig, twice a month over at
Movie Poop Shoot, and the most recent articles have been added to my column
archive. Also, I've started reviewing most new releases I see at Grayhaven;
that link will take you to the page where they are all located. No day job
at the moment, but there is an internship, and a few prospects. But don't
hold your breath, you'll pass out.
June 11, 2002: Long while since an update. I am now a Syracuse alumni
(the text just above you has been changed to reflect my new nigh-omnipotent
status), and I'm back home, looking for a job. I've already completed one brief
internship and now commute 3 days a week to a small production company in
Manhattan called Naked Eye Productions.
On the writing front, things go well. I am now the Review Columns Editor at
PopImage (Meaning the reviews editor is exhausted and needs helps) and I'm
pitching up uploading files and copy editing. The first piece I assembled can
be viewed right here.
I've also got a new review at PI, my first ever of a book without pictures; a
journalistic account of Marvel's money woes called Comic Wars.
And in perhaps the BIGGEST news, Kevin Smith and his wacky companions are starting
a new website on all things pop culture. Former From The Wire staff writer and
online chum Chris Ryall is the EIC, and he kindly asked me to bring my movie
reviews there. The site, named after a fake site in Smith's last film, debuts
a week from Monday, 6/17, and my first piece (already submitted) will be up on
6/19. You can check out a welcome message here.
Phew. Lots to talk about. Quickly, recommendations. Film: Sweet
Smell of Success, Undercover Brother. Music: Wilco's Yankee
Foxtrot Hotel, John Mayer's Room For Squares. And, Pete would be
proud, I'm getting into Belle and Sebastian.
May 2nd, 2002: Brand new The Good,
The Bad, and The Ugly is up at Grahaven. Also, in honor of Spider-Man
opening tomorrow (And yes, I WILL be there), there is a special "Point/
Counterpoint" edition of From
The Wire at PopImage. Two days ago, I had my last class at Syracuse.
Trippy stuff. Oh, and please hire me. Please?
April 25th, 2002: After literally years of teasing you, a complete
site redesign is almost done. Soon, very soon, the boobery you see here shall
be gone, replaced by boobery that looks a lot nicer and has far better coding.
For a sneak peak, click here.
This redesign is by Chris Butcher, co-founder of PopImage, and colorist on
Image Comics' Go Girl! series. He has a new website about comics, 212.net, and he is a terrific guy, so I suggest you
click there now and enjoy the comic-related cheer.
April 22nd, 2002: New From
The Wire for those who enjoy such things. If you're not counting down
the seconds until Spider-Man on May 3rd, well then we need to have
words. CD recommendation of the moment is Phantom Planet's The Guest,
perfect April music. Last week at this time it was 85 degrees outside. I
had shorts on and a fan going. Right now it is 30 degrees and snowing. I'll
miss you Syracuse!
April 10th, 2002: New reviews on the IMDb for Showtime and Say It Isn't So
are up, plus some new pictures are online as well. Tons of good music
is out right now, including discs by Ed Harcourt, The Hives, and The Candy
Butchers.
March 19th, 2002:Grayhaven's updated, and so too has this
page. You've got new Subjective
Truth, a new music review, and the triumphant return of my movie
review column,
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly!! After many months (of hotly
contested litigation), GBU
is back over at Grayhaven. That should be updating monthly, and given my
recent spurt of movie watching, keeping it up shouldn't be too tough. RIP Taurus of Love (1991-2002),
you will be missed by us all.
March 6th, 2002: A little tweaking of the IMDb section, removed a
few weaker ones for better stuff (Office Space, The Ladies Man, Freddy Got Fingered)
and a new review,
A Beautiful Mind . Your crap movie recommendation of the week is
Rollerball (Catch it before it's out of theaters; you've got less time than
you think, which means if you don't go right now, you'll miss it). And if you can
find a copy, check out Ben Kweller's
debut CD "Sha Sha." Great laid-back singer-songwriter rock. And if you happen
to run in to Sandy Singer, wish her a happy birthday for me.
March 1st, 2002:The first new From The Wire in a few months is up at
PopImage, and I've also added a new IMDb review, Raw Deal, and for a kick check
out this link. This is only the beginning folks. You are witnesses to the
revolution. Viva la Matt!
February 24th, 2002: I added a new picture I discovered on my computer
(it involves live performances of Creed, so beware), and I've also added a new
IMDb link, to the brilliantly silly Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo,
a movie that is only about breakdancing. Don't let the plots and characters
fool you; it is only about breakdancing. If only countries settled their
difference with breakdancing, like Breakin' 2, the world would be so much
cooler.
February 15th, 2002: A new Subjective Truth is up at Grayhaven,
and I also contributed to several Best Of and roundtable articles on there
you can peruse. That music section is a very cool, eclectic site to stroll
around, I am very proud to be a part of that group. And speaking of proud,
with my review of Driven, I have now broken the 100 review mark on the
IMDb. In honor of this hugely momentous occassion of ecstatic joy (Don't
let me oversell it here), I've started a brand new IMDb review section
on my site. I've provided a link to my review index, as well as direct
links to some of my favorite reviews. I hope you check it out; even though
some of the reviews are better than others, I am proud that I've continued
to do this. And maybe I've even gotten better at this stuff as I've gone
on.
January 25th, 2002: Two new pictures are up in the archive. As
you all know, modeling is my real love, and these are for the portfolio.
Once I grad'iate, I gotta fall back on my looks.
January 18th, 2002: A new review at PopImage, for Bluntman
and Chronic, the new Kevin Smith graphic novel (it's a goodie too).
Final (gulp) semester of college is starting well, not a terribly difficult
workload. Lots of writing; and video games. Simpsons Road Rage for PS2
is the most addictive thing since crack. Seriously, they want people to
quick the smack, just give 'em this thing, they'll forget the junk in
no time.
January 14th, 2002: As if I didn't have enough crap to do, I've
helped launch Grayhaven Magazine's
Music section, with a commentary/review column entitled The
Subjective Truth. Just like my other stuff, I'll be archiving them
here for easy consumption. Should go up once a month or so, and I'll also
be contributing the odd panel piece on stuff like the best albums of 2001,
for example. AND Grayhaven will shortly begin posting BRAND NEW installments
of the long in limbo "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" movie reviews.
I've been writing, and since they were never being updated, most of them
have gone up on the IMDb (I'm almost up to 100 freakin' comments there).
But hopefully by next month, you'll have two new groovy columns to go
along with my other usual idiotic output.
December 17th, 2001: From The Wire #18 is up at PopImage,
and it's completely written by me. Went over pretty well amongst the uh,
who's who, or whatever you want to call it. Over at IMDb,
I'm approaching 100 reviews, which is both amazing and pathetic. And,
big news for my online writing career, I'll be branching off very soon
into music writing for another website. Stay tuned toons.
November 26th, 2001: Wow, long time since I did this. Anyway, been
super busy with senior year. But I've freed up long enough to add two
new pictures to the photo gallery, and a new From The Wire is listed here.
Also, a new Mix
CD is up for your perusal and downloading pleasure. PS: Less than
a month til I'm 21!
September 8th, 2001: The Secrets sections has been revamped, all
the previous entries from 2001 are housed on the Secrets Page ('natch)
with the old ones from the year 2000. They can all be viewed right HERE.
Senior year has started. UU has started and for that go to U-Union.syr.edu.
You'll be glad you did.
August 26th, 2001: TONS of new PICTURES! Check them out in the
Postcards From The Edge section. I've got shots from Troma, shots of Shea
Stadium, and shots with celebs! Go now and beat the rush!
August 24th, 2001: 2 more From The Wire's available, and a comics
essay. Just about to go to school, when you can expect some site cleanup
and more frequent updates.
