Run Like Mad
by Jann Arden
My heart is in my hands
My head is in the clouds
My feet have left the ground
My life is turning around and round.
Every voice inside my head is telling me to run like mad
Oh bows and arrows
Stars and sunsets
Hey hey hey yeah
Hey hey hey yeah.
Every heartbeat every kiss just
Makes me wonder what all this is
Suits of armour
Hearts and arrows
Hey hey yeah.

Variation on the Word Sleep
by Margaret Atwood
I would like to watch you sleeping,
which may not happen
I would like to watch you
sleeping. I would like to sleep
with you, to enter
your sleep as its smooth dark wave
slides over my head
and walk with you through that lucent
wavering forest of bluegreen leaves
with its watery sun & three moons
towards the cave where you must descend,
towards your worst fear
I would like to give you the silver
branch the small white flower, the one
word that will protect you
from the grief at the center
of your dream, from the grief
at the center. I would like to follow
you up the long stairway
again & become
the boat that would row you back
carefully, a flame
in two cupped hands
to where your body lies
beside me, and you enter
it as easily as breathing in
I would like to be the air
that inhabits you for a moment
only. I would like to be that unnoticed
& that necessary.

Sofia Coppola Your film will be 64% romantic, 24% comedy, 27% complex plot, and a $ 17 million budget. |
Relatively inexperienced (The Virgin Suicides, Lost In Translation) as a director, but already highly respected and connected -- her dad, Francis, directed all The Godfather movies, Apocolypse Now. Also, at last word she's dating Quentin Tarantino, so I'm sure he'll have some input into the substance of your film. Sofia's good at making the romantic drama that is your life. Who didn't have at least a lump in the throat at the end of Lost In Translation? She's already won one Academy Award for her writing, now she'll be the first woman to receive one for directing -- YOUR FILM! |

BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY UP CINEMA!!!!! Got Film?
~~~
pagkatapos ma-expose sa cuteness level ni kuya arnold, na-expose naman ako sa hotness level ni Ping Medina (ganda ng shoulders, pare. pang colin firth level), na hindi ko masyado type dati pero ngayon nakikita ko na cute nga siya, especially dahil sa boses niyang malalim.
kumusta naman ang pose? in fairness ang ganda ng mata.
my favorite group pic. siyempre kami, pose lang ng pose.
~~~
sabi ng aking pasaway na adviser: in hindsight, I don't think you need that scene. You can take it out.

Post-Valentine Chuva
February 15, 2006
My friends and I spent Valentines at Chocolate Kiss in their so-called "Single But Happy Club" which I don't really agree with because what's with the discrimination against singledom.
And looking at my friends' crazy love lives, I wonder why I miss it so. I had all that before--the kilig, the insecurities, the sweet moments, the tears, the ups and downs, etc... and i'm not really sure if i need it all again. yes, love makes us feel horribly alive but sometimes that's because we make too much of it and expect too much of it. Too much that the only available path is disillusionment.
oh well.
speaking of disillusionment, though i know i'm not in love right now, i am totally in crush even though the guy is gay. why oh why oh why are all the cute guys gay? it's totally depressing.

whatever happened to forever and a day, that song sang by rachel alejandro that won Metropop in 2000? (speaking of which, whatever happened to Metropop? at least that was a competition about real talent.) I've been looking for an mp3 or even just the lyrics because i remember loving it so much the first time i heard it (i even wrote the lyrics down in one of my dozens of notebooks in high school.) I can't find it anywhere. waaaah.

Ang Pagbabalik Pagkatapos Ng Thesis
February 12, 2006
pero hindi pa actually tapos ang thesis pero at least natapos na ang principal photography part. am now crossing my fingers that I don't have to reshoot anything. all i can say is that i'm extremely happy that i gave in to mimay's insistent demands to cast theater actors arnold reyes and angeli bayani as alfredo and julia despite of their busy schedules (and my having to cut class) because i had my crew either kinikilig or naiiyak all throughout my shoot and because i admit that i'm a really nervvy director and it's a good thing that they're so good at what they do and so lets just say that in the near future, i'll stick to writing first and see what happens after that.
in the meantime, i've started editing and am now looking over the production stills with laughter because it's all arnold and then some.
my one and only picture with the 35mm camera.
arnold reyes, who seemed to know exactly when the digicam was turned his way. beside him is ate anj while my assistant director chinggay blocks her movements.
i so loove this picture.
~~~
in the meantime, went to watch both of them in Zsa-zsa Zaturnnah, Ze Musikal. Arnold plays Dodong, the hero(ine) Ada's love interest. it involved him taking his shirt off in a couple of scenes. to repeat that infamous line said by Ada's sidekick Didi...buong-buo ang noodles!
Beyond that, it was a fun, fun, fun experience that i hope to repeat.
kumusta naman ang mga taong bumoto sa akin sa yearbook bilang most likely to remain single? yung library hermit nagegets ko pa at talagang mahal na mahal ko ang library bilang isang lugar. pero sana talaga...haaay.
i think my sore throat's become a permanent thing. I hope it will go away so that I can sing the song for my score (if i can't then mimay will of course, but i really really want to.) and speaking of singing, anne curtis is on the tv singing. oh gosh, is there no end to the torture?
If I Apologise
January 25, 2006
If I apologised
it wouldn't make it all unhappen
wouldn't make the darkness go away
If I apologised
it wouldn't mean I was forgiven
wouldn't mean you wanted me to stay
But
it's a dream
when you seem
to be walking into the sun
we're on first
unrehearsed
and we still don't know what we've done
so we don't say anything.
If I apologised
I don't suppose you'd even notice
even though I'd whisper it inside
If I apologised
we could be the perfect couple
Well we could, but only in my mind
but
if you ask
for the mask
then we're stumbling on through the dark
But we wait
it's too late
And we only had to be asked
so we don't say anything.
It couldn't hurt to try it
It couldn't hurt too much to try
It's there beyond the quiet
it couldn't hurt too much to fly...
The Problem With Fiction
January 21, 2006
I recently read a romance novel (yes, they're my guilty pleasure but I still insist that I learn a lot from them, especially vocabulary like fortnight, fustian, facetious, dandy, corinthian, etc...)
Anyway, so this was based on true people, namely Simon de Montfort and Princess Eleanor of England and how they fell in love, blah blah blah. And in the end, there's a note that Simon won the great battle and he ruled Britain wisely and that their's was one of the greatest love stories ever.
Which is weird because I don't remember a King Simon of Great Britain. So anyway I began to research about British History and in all fairness, he did rule britain...for ONE YEAR!
and then there was another battle where he was KILLED, DISMEMBERED, ETC restoring King Henry (if forgot which, i think the fourth), Eleanor's brother, to the throne.
I HATE IT. HATE IT. HATE IT. HATE IT.
I'm not so naive to believe in happily ever after but sometimes I wish I can keep the illusion up.
And because my illusions are spoiled, I will spoil yours also. Do you know what happens in the end of Chronicles of Narnia? THEY DIE! THEY DO! All of them except for Susan. C.S. Lewis killed them off in a train crash. And do you know what happens in The Sandman? HE DIES! HE DOES! The furies get to him. And do you know what happens to us? WE DIE! YES WE DO!
See, it's better to have no illusions at all.
~~~
Speaking of illusions, there are only a few days left to my thesis. oh, i don't really like the production part. i like the conceptualization and the post production but i hate shooting. It always makes me nervous and i'm not really sure if I make any sense. and part of the problem, i think, is because everyone thinks my script is good and i'm afraid that i won't be able to live up to my (or their) expectations. oh well, we'll see.

This is becoming one of my favorite songs even though I haven't heard it yet. But honestly, it's so cute, i don't even think i need to hear it to love it. At kahit nakapost na siya sa sidebar, ipopost ko lang ulit dito. Wala lang. For more redundancy.
A Meaningful Dialogue
by Neil Gaiman
I can see your lips are moving
I can’t hear a single word you say
I suppose you’re kind of telling me it’s over now
and I should go away
Relationships are tricky
We have to be grown up and be mature
You’re telling me it’s over
But there’s one thing that I know for sure...
I’ve got my fingers in my ears I’m going lalalalalalalalalala,
I can’t hear you
I got my fingers in my ears I’m going lalalalalalalalalala
Going la la la la
Maybe you’re telling me you love me
Maybe you’re saying I’m cool
Perhaps you’re telling me you’re sorry that you ever tried
to make me look a fool
Relationships are stupid
You say we have to talk until we’re done
Well you can talk and talk forever
But it isn’t gonna change thing one...
It works okay when I’m in trouble,
It works well if my boss gets mad.
And right this minute it’s my solution to
the worst day that I’ve ever had
Relationships are funny
I know that ours is gonna be just fine
If we face the world together
And your response is just like mine...

At kumusta naman ang Da Vinci Code which is a very popular yet very fluffy book. I much prefer The Rule of Four of Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason which is offers a lot more than page-turning excitement (which, by the way, is my whole opinion of the Harry Potter Series. Don't get me wrong, i like reading the series but i'm sick and tired of hearing "ay, parang harry potter" in bookstores comparing it to older, more beloved fantasy classics. and one more thing: i also wish that Rowling won't pull the Mentor-who-died-but-is-alive-after-all with Dumbledore. After all it happened to Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings, Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia, and the headmaster *sorry I forgot his name* in The Earthsea Cycle.)
But I'm glad Pride and Prejudice, JRR Tolkien and Neil Gaiman (oh, him again? haha, dapat sanay na kayo) made the list.

While watching The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe:
person behind me: ayan na...ayan na...lalabas na ang lion!
me: hindi pa lalabas ang lion.
person behind me a few moments later: ayan na...lalabas na ang lion...lalabas na ang lion!
me: hindi pa nga lalabas ang lion.
person behind me throughout the whole movie: lalabas na ang lion! lalabas na ang lion!
me: mamaya pa lalabas ang lion!
i realized a while later that he was just doing it to control his little daughter but please. the lion's not supposed to be scary.

Ano Nga Ba ang Tagalog ng Inertia?
January 8, 2006
Actually, di pa January 8. pero since gusto ko mag-post ulit, para bukas na lang 'to.
~~~
Ayan, nagreresearch na ako and all. Isang oras yata ako nakatingin sa mga english-tagalog/tagalog-english dictionary, naghahanap ng tagalog ng inertia. or kahit anong word lang naman na pwedeng maging title ng thesis. itong adviser ko kasi, sinabing masyadong pretentious. well, pretentious nga pero kumusta naman ang mga suggestions niya tulad ng:
song of despair
okay so hindi naman yan masyadong revolting. pero masyado namang pang melodrama. tapos sinabi niya, ba't di na lang daw...
tulay
ay naku. hindi ko alam kung nakita niya reaction ko nito. naging mas masama pa nung sinabi niyang...
tulay ng pag-ibig
shet, buti na lang, hindi ako tumawa. sabi ko lang, sir, it's too melodramatic. i'll find another title.
in fairness, nakahanap naman ako. pero di ko muna sasabihin.
pahabol...
thesis adviser: binibigyan ko lang ang film mo ng ambulance (looks at me expectingly)
me: (not reacting and still scribbling notes in my paper)
thesis adviser: ambience!
me: ha? ah. okay. (aside: sir naman, nag-joke ka pa.)
~~~
may special mention ako sa

at buti na lang tama ang spelling ng pangalan ko.
Haaaaaayyyyyy...
January 7, 2006
Spent the last 4 hours trying to do something. Unfortunately, it hasn't worked yet. And now I've wasted 4 hours of what was supposed to be research time. oh well.
In the meantime, here's what I have to do (but unfortunately haven't done yet):
1. finalize my thesis script. hopefully my last draft. which is somewhat dependent on...
2. finding a church/old building being renovated...because the ones i went to weren't really being renovated after all. and i don't want to construct an imaginary renovation on an existing church/old building. it's expensive not to mention the people who own the church/building will probably not allow me to because it might result in destruction of their property.
3. my pi100 paper, actually proposal for a paper about rizal's novels (i.e. noli me tangere and el filibusterismo)
4. research on a debate for socio 10 about abrogating the VFA agreement
5. interviewing more people for my advance scriptwriting class
6. get my drive f fixed
7. finalize the interactive cd and graduation avp concept
and so all i'm really doing now is procrastinating and hoping that i'll somehow get my thesis script and pi paper done by monday, my interviews done by wednesday and my research done by thursday.
huhu.
Some Missing Stuff and a Pair of Star-Crossed Lovers
January 6, 2006
For some reason a lot of things are being misplaced around the house. They're not exactly the kind of things that are stolen. A few months ago it was my collection of newpaper clips about Neil Gaiman's visit to Manila (oh, here i go again. i dare you to count how many times I mention Neil Gaiman in this blog.)
Anyway, now it's two of my piano books. One is my beloved Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings score book and the other is a Movie Theme Book with As Time Goes By from Casablanca and hopefully, The Man That Got Away which was what I was looking for when I discovered them missing in the first place.
I know they're just somewhere around here. They're not exactly priceless things that are sellable and i don't know anyone of my acquaintance who would desire them because i'm the only one i know who can actually play the piano.
if you've somehow seen these books or accidentally got them by mistake please give a shout. i don't think i'll be able to find them under the piles of stuff around the house.
sigh.
~~~
hyped myself up for Hollywood's production of Tristan and Isolde starring James Franco and Sophia Myles (which reminds me, i'm still wondering why Panday's real world name is Tristan. I wish they had picked a more filipino name instead of this which sounds so...english. oh well...moving on)
The first time I read the story was in Bulfinch's Mythology. Now, I'm a proud owner of The Romance of Tristan and Iseult and reading it all of course has made me curious. After all, this came before Lancelot and Guinevere, Romeo and Juliet, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy (oh, i'm sorry, they're not star-crossed lovers)...hmmm...Guy and Pip?
But now reading the quotes from the trailer in imdb i'm kinda wondering if it's worth it:
Isolde: How many did you love before me?
Tristan: None.
Isolde: And after me?
Tristan: None.
(okay, this is not really remotely sickening to read. I just wonder if the two can pull it off on screen)
Tristan: With every look he gives you I get sicker and sicker.
(isolde is betrothed to king mark. tristan, like the obedient knight/lap dog he is, still brought her over to england instead of running away with her. how stupid is that? now stop complaining because it was you, after all, who chose to be honorable)
Tristan: What's your name?
Isolde: Oh, I think it's better if we don't bother with names.
(haha....hahahahahaha....hahahahahahahahahahahaha....huh?)
Tristan: Your marriage will end a hundred years of bloodshed.
Isolde: [crying] My marriage to *another* man!
(oh dear, whining yet again.)
now you see what i mean? the lines are soooooo corny. and i think the initial reviews that i've read are right. this won't compare to wagner's opera. I don't know if i still want to watch it. oh who am i kidding. i do want to watch it still. i'll just rent the video in video48.
Happy New Year!!!!
January 3, 2006
Will start this post off with the best new year's greeting I've ever read, made, of course, by my favorite famous person in the entire world, mr. neil gaiman:
May your 2006 be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you're wonderful, and don't forget to make some art -- write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in 2006, you surprise yourself.
~~~
Got my Christmas wish and now have new additions to my library...
bought for Php35 at booksale in davao:
The Cinderella Complex (Colette Dowling...haha, just curious about what she has to say. for those who don't know, the cinderella complex states that all women are really afraid of independence and want to be saved by a man/prince like in cinderella.)
The Folk of the Air (Peter S. Beagle...who also wrote The Last Unicorn which I just loved!)
Ordinary People (Judith Guest...the one the film was based on. and since I loved the film, I was so happy when I found this. Already read the first paragraph and loving it too. so there.)
bought brand new in fully booked:
Ella Enchanted (Gail Garson Levine...already read it and it's fun. it's so far, far away from the movie version though, it's a wonder that thing is still called an adaptation)
Sandman: The Collected Dustcovers (Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman...beautiful, beautiful artwork and it helps my Sandman collection very well)
Noisy Outlaws, Unfriendly Blobs and Some Other Things That Aren't as Scary, Maybe, Depending on How You Feel About Lost Lands, Stray Cellphones, Creatures from the Sky, Parents Who Disappear in Peru, a Man Named Lars Farf, and One Other Story We Couldn't Quite Finish, So Maybe You Could Help Us Out (Various Authors including Nick Hornby, Lemony Snickett and Neil Gaiman...was supposed to buy the Absolute Watchmen but saw this book and so my money was not enough to buy it. Anyway. i already love the little i've read of this book, not to mention the gorgeous title and the inside cover with the big blob holding his arms out and saying hold me, hehe)
bought from avalon.ph but not claimed yet:
Reservoir Dogs/True Romance: Screenplays by Tarantino (Quentin Tarantino...coz i love his work, not as much as Sofia Coppola's but enough.)
The Law of Love (Laura Esquivel...just curious about it and since I liked Like Water for Chocolate...)
now what I really, really want is a book of e.e. cummings's poetry...and of course the watchmen.

Finally understand David Lynch's Mulholland Drive after reading a guide in the internet. which is kinda depressing as i am a film major. and even so, i still prefer Christopher Nolan's Memento because it gave me goosebumps when it ended.
also watched Peter Jackson's King Kong. many reviews are mixed and some don't like it at all. but i do. it was moving and entertaining with edge-of-the-seat suspense which is more than other movies have. not to mention adrian brody's cuteness. and after mulholland drive and 21 grams and this, i now place naomi watts in my best actresses ever list. and it really was beauty that killed the beast after all.
also watched some MMFF films, namely Exodus, Ako Legal Wife and Mulawin. Exodus was okay, except the ending was a bit rushed. the cinematography by lyle sacris didn't disappoint me and although i love the production design and the sets, i hated the costumes, especially the mask of villain. it was supposed to be scary but it looked kinda funny to me. i wish though that Bong Revilla will stop acting (in the first place, he's not even capable of acting) or at least give away the macho warrior roles to younger and fitter actors (although i can't make up my mind if he's made of more fat or muscle, i can't see exactly under the costume. anyway.)
In the meantime, Ako Legal Wife was a fun, fun trip except for the ending which sucked big time. but when you stop and think about it most portrayals of the women, gay men or chinese are exaggerated and stereotypical (duh. after all, it's a parody). it's good. (Cherrie Pie Picache, especially and even Zsa-zsa Padilla who i don't really like.) it could have been better. but please stop making more mano po movies please. please. please.
and all i have to say about mulawin is i tried to keep myself from laughing throughout the whole movie because i was watching with a fan of the tv series. it's exactly like the tv series...long and unnecessary. i don't know how long i could stand richard gutierrez gazing longingly at angel locsin. and i swear, i can't count how many times information was spoonfed to the audience. and oh how i wish (spoiler alert!) that aguiluz really died. but no! they just had to bring him back to life. can you see a mulawin 2 on the horizon?!! the horror! the horror! and not to mention a real tragic waste of film.
