Eaker Field - Home of SOSU's Aerospace Department

The Aerospace Department is part of the School of Business at SOSU. The main offices are located at Eaker Field eight miles south of the main campus. They have five full-time faculty members and four full-time staff and typically eight flight instructors on staff. The department owns fifteen aircraft and maintains them in their own hangar. The field is named in honor of SOSU alum General Ira Eaker. General Eaker was a 1917 graduate of Southeastern and served in both World War I and World War II. During WW II General Eaker was commander of the Eighth Air Force in England and led several historic bombing missions against Nazi Germany. The City of Durant named an airfield west of the town in honor of then Captain Eaker in the 1930's. The U.S. Navy built the current airfield as an auxilary field during WW II and it became Durant Municipal Airport after the war. Later it was renamed Eaker Field in honor of now General Eaker.
