Ancients
An ancient race of beings with incredible powers. The last known ancient alive is Aeris Gainsborough.

Avalanche
A group of rebels led by Barret Wallace who oppose Shinra, Inc.

- B -

Bahamut
A series of summon materia in which a huge dragon is summoned to blast all enemies. In order of increasing power, they are Bahamut, Neo Bahamut, and Bahamut Zero.

Battle Square
One of the areas in Gold Saucer. The object is to defeat 8 enemies in a row. The enemies increase in diffuculty and a new handicap is given for each subsequent round. The more enemies defeated the more battle points you earn. The more battle points you earn, the better the prizes you can receive.

Black Materia
This is a very powerful materia that can summon a Meteor from across the galaxy and have it crash into the earth.

Bone Villiage
This villiage, located in the southeastern section of the Icicle Region, is a campsite for archaeologists trying to dig up lost artifacts. It's characterized by a huge dinosaur skeleton.

- C -

Chocobo
This is a type of bird native to earth in Final Fantasy VII. They can get you where you're going faster than walking. There are 5 different breeds of chocobos. The yellow one is a standard chocobo which can only run across grassy areas.

Chocobo Farm
A small ranch south of Kalm where chocobos are bred and raised.

Chocobo Sage
He is a very old and forgetful wizard. But if you're patient, he'll remember how to raise chocobos and pass his knowledge on to you. He lives in a small house within the mountains located in the mideastern section of Icicle Region. You can buy the best greens from him and also some nuts.

Chocobo Square
An area in Gold Saucer where you can bet on chocobo races or race your own chocobos.

City of the Ancients
A hidden city where the Ancients once lived. It is now abandoned and impossible to find unless you know the secret to the Sleeping Forest.

Command Materia
The type of materia that, when eqipped, adds a new command to the character's list of commands. Sometimes it replaces an existing command. For example, the Slash-All materia will replace Attack with Slash-All. It's characterized by a yellow color.

Corel Prison
A prison located at the base of Gold Saucer.

Cosmo Canyon
A spiritual place west of Gongaga where people go to learn the nature of the universe and watch the stars from the great observatory. The observatory is run by the wise old Bugenhagen, whom Red XIII calls "Grandfather."

Costa del Sol
A sunny resort town located on the seashore east of the Mount Corel Mako Reactor.

Downed Shinra Plane
A Shinra airplane which crashed into the sea long ago. There are some useful items hidden here. You'll need the submarine to reach it.

Ether
An item that will restore some MP back to a single character.

Event Square
An area in Gold Saucer where live shows are displayed in a huge arena.

Fort Condor
A fort containing a Mako Reactor which is southwest of the Chocobo Farm. A giant condor sits atop the reactor waiting for it's egg to hatch. Shinra wants to get the condor off of the reactor, so they attack the fort every so often. You can help the effort by contributing Gil or fighting the attackers yourself.

- G -

Ghost Square
An are in Gold Saucer which has a ghostly-themed hotel. You can rest there and buy basic items.

Gil
The currency of the world in Final Fantasy VII. You need this to buy everything. You get more as you kill more enemies.

Gold Saucer
This is the Disney World of Final Fantasy VII. It's an amusment park built on a giant golden spire which houses 7 huge saucers. Each saucer contains a different square with different events. It towers above the great desert just south of North Corel. The only way to reach it is to take an air trolly from North Corel.

Gongaga
This town is located across the river, west of Gold Saucer. It houses an old Mako Reactor which is no longer in operation.

GP
This is the currency of Gold Saucer. You can win it by playing games in Wonder Square, betting on chocobo races, or racing chocobos. Everything else requires GP to participate in.

Great Glacier
An area within the mountains in the northern part of Icicle Region.

Greens
What chocobos eat.

- H -

Hades
A powerful summon materia in which you summon a dark sorceror who not only deals massive damage to all enemies, but he also inflicts several status ailment on them, such as Frog, Mini, Sleep, Poison, Confuse, and Mute. You can find this in the Downed Shinra Plane.

Highwind
Cid's last name; the airship you use to go everywhere on Discs 2 and 3; Cid's Level 4 Limit Break, where he commands the Highwind to fire about 20 missles at all enemies.

Holy
The power of goodness that is summoned by the White Materia. It's the only thing that can stop Meteor.

HP
Stands for Hit Points. This represents how much damage that characters and enemies can receive before they die.

Huge Materia
Highly concentrated materia with far more power than normal materia. However, they can't be activated normally. When activated, they can create Master Materia.

- I -

Icicle Lodge
A small lodge located in the midwestern section of Icicle Region, which is just south of the Great Glacier.

Icicle Region
The northern continent, characterized by cold weather conditions and mountains.

Independent Materia
A type of materia that effects it's user contstantly, sometimes being activated by a particular event. For example, HP Plus will always increase it's user maximum HP. Counter will sometimes have the character counter attack against a creature that just him him. It's characterized by a purple color.

- J -

Jenova Project
A scientific profect started by Dr. Hojo. He took the cells of an ancient named Jenova and injects them into people for strange effects.

Junon
A military town west of Fort Condor, which is seperated into two cities: Upper Juno and Lower Junon. Lower Junon looks like a typical town, but Upper Junon is home to a Shinra military base and airfield. It also houses a huge cannon called Sister Ray.

Kalm
A small port town just southeast of Midgar.

Knights of the Round
The most powerful summon materia (any materia, for that matter) in the game. You summon 13 Knights of the Roundtable to deal massive amounts of damage to all enemies each.

Kupo Nut
What mogs like to eat.

- L -

Level 4 Limit Break
This is the highest level and most powerful Limit Break that any character can get. Unlike the other limit breaks, this one must be found and used after all other Limit Breaks for that charcater have been mastered.

Leviathan
A moderately powerful summon materia in which you summon a huge sea monster that hurls a tidal wave on all of your enemies. You can find it in Wutai.

Life Stream
A stream that rests beneath the planet's surface where the souls of the dead are gathered.

Limit Break
Each character has a number of special powers called Limit Breaks. Most characters have 4 Levels, with Levels 1-3 each containing two different Limit Breaks and Level 4 containing one. The exceptions are Cait Sith, who has two Levels with one power each and Vincent who has 4 levels with one power each. Limit Breaks are activated when a character's Limit Gauge fills up. It fills up as the character takes damage from enemies. So the more a character gets hit, the more his Limit Gauge fills up. When his Limit Gauge is full, his Attack command will be replaced with Limit, which will allow the character to use any limits on the current level selected. Once a character has used his Limit Break, the Limit Gauge goes back to 0. Game hint: If you want a character's limit gauge to fill faster, give him a Hyper, which gives him the Fury status. Then give him the Cover materia.

Lunar Harp
A magical item that is needed to enter the Sleeping Forest. Get the excavators in Bone Villiage to dig it up for you.

- M -

Magic Materia
A type of materia which allows it's user to cast magic spells such as Fire, Ice, Lighting, Earth, etc. It is characterized by a green color.

Mako Energy
Energy created from by the souls of dead who live in the Life Stream. It's this energy that keeps the planet alive. Whenever the planet is damaged, Mako Energy is released to fix the wound.

Mako Reactor
A reactor created by Shinra which gathers and stores Mako Energy to be used by the various places around the world.

Masamune
A powerful long sword which can only be used by Sephiroth.

Master Materia
Materia that contains all the powers of the materia of that type. For example, if you master at least one of each magic materia, you can get the green Huge Materia to perform a materia blend, which will convert all of your mastered materia of that type into the Master Magic Materia.

Materia
Materia is crystalized Mako Energy that has special powers. It also grows if it's placed on most weapons or armor. It grows through AP gained by killing monsters. When it grows to it's maximum possible AP level, it becomes mastered and divides into a new materia of the same type.

Megalixir
An item that restores all characters to their maximum HP and MP.

Meteor
What is summoned by the Black Materia. Sephiroth plans to ram the Meteor into the planet.

Mideel
A town located on an island to the southeast of the main continent. The Life Stream runs underneath this town.

Midgar
This is the most populated and techlogically advanced city in the world. At the center sits the Shinra Building, surrounded by huge plates with bulidings and industries and a Mako Reactor at the end of each plate. Underneath the plates are the slums, where the poor live.

Mog
A creature with a big round body and tiny little pink wings. They come in many colors, including white, yellow, and pink.

Mount Corel
The mountain which is just north of North Corel. The Mt. Corel Reactor is located there.

Mount Nibel
The mountain just north of Nibelheim, within which lives the Materia Keeper and other assorted secrets.

MP
Stands for Magic Points. As spells are cast, a certain amount of Magic Points are used up.

- N -

Nibelheim
A town northwest of Cosmo Canyon where Cloud and Tifa are from. It supposedly burned down years ago, but it seems mighty fine, now.

North Corel
The remains of the original Corel after it was burned down by Shinra. It's located just north of Gold Saucer and it contains the only means by which to reach it. Barret and Dyne are from here.

Nuts
Feed these to chocobos when you want them to breed.

Odin
A summon materia in which you summon the mighty warrior Odin, riding upon his six-legged steed. Against weak enemies, he slashes and kills them instantly. Against stronger enemies and bosses, he hurls a great lance in to the sky to have it come crashing down.

Quadra Magic
Support materia that allows you to cast a spell 4 times in a row, but only using MP for one casting.

Rocket Town
A town north of Nibelheim and east of Wutai in which there's a giant rocket platform and a huge, tilted, dormant rocket. Cid is from here.

Round Square
An area in Gold Saucer where you can get on a gondola and ride around the park.

Shinra, Inc.
The corporation that rules the world. For more info, see the Shinra, Inc. page.

Sister Ray
A huge canon that extends from Upper Junon. It was later moved to Midgar.

Sleeping Forest
Near Bone Villiage, this is the only way to reach the City of the Ancients. But you'll get lost without the Lunar Harp.

Speed Square
An area in Gold Saucer where you can ride a roller coaster and shoot things for points. If you get 3,000-4,999 points, you get a crappy prize. If you get 5,000+ points, you get a very good prize.

Summon Materia
This materia allows you to summon a monster or warriors from another dimension and have them attack all of your enemies. It is characterized by a red color.

Support Materia
This materia helps out other materia. You usually link this materia to another materia to perform a certain efect. For example, if you pair the All Support materia with the Fire Magic materia, you can cast Fire on all enemies, not just one. It is characterized by a blue color.

Temple of the Ancients
This is a mysterious place that contains some of the history, prophecies, and secrets of the Ancients.

Turbo Ether
An item that completely restores one character's MP back to it's maximum.

Wall Market
A merchant center in the Sector 6 slums of Midgar.

White Materia
This materia summons the power of Holy, which is the only thing that can stop Meteor.

Wonder Square
An area in Gold Saucer where you can play severl different games by using Gil. You can win GP, which can be exchanged for items here or used elsewhere in Gold Saucer.

Wutai
A tourist town on the northern part of the westernmost island. Yuffie is from here.

9999
The maximum amount of damage that any one single attack can hit for against you or your opponents. It is also the absolute maximum HP for your characters.
