A Dramatic Announcement

For two and a half of the past three years, PaDS has - as we dramatic folk like to put it - been 'resting'. However, following a successful 'Acting Funny' revue in August in the Church Rooms and a spirited pre-Christmas 'Christmas Carol' at the Institute, PaDS is staging a revival. Of course, as was fairly commented in last month's Beacon, there were some rough edges on display. Christmas Carol had its fair share of those hairy, scary moments which make Am Dram (or 'Community Theatre' as you're now supposed to call it) so much 'fun'. The reason (for example) for the slightly surreal lighting effects during the opening night was that we couldn't find the lighting box key until about two minutes before the start!

Inspired by the results so far (or despite them, depending on your point of view), we have decided to have an open 'Where do we go from here' meeting on Tuesday, 10 February. The agenda will include mapping out a future programme. Current thinking is for another revue around Easter and a Victorian melodrama to accompany the Victorian Day on 11 July. This meeting will be followed up a fortnight later (24 February) with auditions.

Looking further into the future, the goal is to stage regular, full set, full length plays at the Institute. To do this we need to build up a solid membership base, not only actors but also the technical and other non-acting staff which a successful group needs. It's part of the magic of theatre that you can nail a few odd bits of wood together, slap on some paint and then - through clever use of lighting and stage effects - make the audience believe that they've been whisked off to another world where everything looks like it has been made from bits of old wood, nailed together and plastered with paint! We need people to help perform this magic. We also need to contact those of you who used to be past members of PaDS and 'know where the bodies are buried' We want to learn from the past!

Finally, we want to draw in all those dramatic wannabes or mightwannabes who have moved into Painswick since PaDS was last active: now's your chance.. to be part of ...well, what? One thing we would like to consider at the 10 Feb meeting is a change of name. Thus far the nominations are:

* The Yew Tree Players... thus commemorating some memorably wooden performances?

* Painswick Luvvies...?

* The Cotswold Queens... !

* Painswick Memorial Theatre... PMT?

With any thoughts, suggestions or comments on the above or anything else dramatic, please call Jean Burgess on (01452) 812 167. And remember: Tuesday, 10 February, 8-00 pm, the Library Rooms. The Bad News is that there will have to be a short formal session to constitute the new group. The Good News is that the rest of the meeting will be totally informal, possibly made the more so by the odd complementary glass of wine.
