The Urban Confidence Course

INTRODUCTION

GAIN ATTENTION

Tactical movement through urban terrain is extremely difficult at best. As Marines, we must always be "in front of the situation" by thinking ahead on how we can negotiate through built-up area and on having the proper equipment required to accomplish our mission.

TERMINAL LEARNING OBJECTIVE

In accordance with MCWP 3-35.3 and without the aid of references be able to negotiate an urban confidence course.

ENABLING LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Perform upper level entry utilizing a ladder.
2. Perform upper level entry utilizing buddy lifts.
3. Move through a window utilizing the proper method.
4. Move over a wall utilizing the proper method.
5. Move through a mouse hole utilizing the proper method.
6. Move through a mouse trap utilizing the proper method.
7. Move through an upper window using a grappling hook.
8. Move tactically through a sewer system without lights.
9. Construct a sandbag wall.
10. Breach a wire obstacle using hasty methods.
11. Medevac a casualty from an urban environment.
12. Clear a room.
13. Properly process an Enemy Prisoner of War (EPW).

METHOD AND MEDIA

This period of instruction will be taught by lecture and through the use of a terrain model in the Camp Lejeune MOUT Facility Building Number 20. MOUT Homepage Note: This course was set up at the Camp Lejeune MOUT Facility. However, a similar course or parts of the course may be constructed and used in similar urban training environments at Camp Pendelton, Marine Corps Base Quantico, and other Marine and Army MOUT facilities or "Combat Towns".

TESTING

This period of instruction will be evaluated through practical application on the MOUT Confidence Course.

TRANSITION

BODY

First, lets review what the urban confidence course comprises. You will conduct the following events along the course throughout the MOUT facility:

1. The course starts on the north end of the MOUT facility at the lake. You will move through the course as a team. Each team will consist of four Marines. The first events consists of the team launching a Zodiac into the lake, boarding, and paddling to the lake’s south end.

2. Team’s will then disembark the Zodiacs, conduct a tactical movement across the bridge, enter Building # 21, exit the building from the north window, and make entry into Building # 23. From here, the team will carry a casualty from the building using one of the buddy carries through the courtyard and around the south side of building to Building # 15 (Casualty Collection Point).

3. Enter Building # 15 from the south side and climb over the wall. Drop off the casualty in the first room and then move to the second deck. Conduct a “spider drop: back down to the ground level.

4. Conduct movement to the northeast side of Building # 15 and then climb up the fire escape ladder to the second deck. Run across to the extension ladder and proceed up to the third deck. Conduct movement from the north side of the building to the south side mousetrap. Go through the mousetrap and proceed down to the ground level deck using the staircase.

5. Go through the south side door and proceed around the southwest side moving north towards Building # 16 and into the soccer stadium from the southern entrance. Once inside the soccer stadium, move east towards Building # 11 and climb over the wall.

6. Conduct movement to Building # 11. Locate the grappling hook on the ground adjacent to the wall on the north side. Using the grappling hook and rope, climb up to the second deck and into the window. Here you will locate an EPW. Process him using the 5 S’s and a T. Leave the EPW at building # 11.

7. Exit building # 11 and move into Building # 2. Enter using a buddy left through the window on the west side adjacent to the street. Exit building # 2 and run across the courtyard to Building # 8.

8. Conduct movement up the stairs to the second deck. Clear this room using one of the clearing techniques. Cut across Building # 8 to Building # 9 via the mouse hole on the second deck. Conduct movement to the ground level via the stairs. Exit Building # 9 from the south side and move east towards Building # 3. 9. Skirt Buildings # 3 and # 4 on the east side. Breach the wire obstacle using wire cutters and push through towards Building # 12. At Building # 12, climb up the rope to the second deck. From here, move downstairs and proceed out the front door. Move across the street and go under Buildings # 3 and # 4 to Building # 1. Move to the northeastern fist floor window and enter. Once inside, move south through the hallway to the center of the building and then move west towards the main entrance doors. Proceed down the stairs to the basement level and negotiate the “Wooden Maze”. No lights are allowed for this portion of the course.

10. After negotiating the maze, turn on your lights and move through the sewer pipe that is approximately five feet above the basement level. Exit the sewer on the east side of Building # 10 onto Main Street.

11. Conduct movement south to the finish line. Here you will fill 20 sandbags as a fire team and build a portion of a sandbag wall.

The following equipment is required for conduct of the Urban Confidence Course:

1. 2 Zodiacs with paddles and BC5/7 vests.
2. 3 grappling hooks with climbing ropes and toggle knots attached.
3. 6 one-half inch diameter hemp ropes, 50 feet in length with toggle knots.
4. Placards to mark route.
5. 3 rolls of engineer tape to mark entry and exit points.
6. 4 tons of dirt.
7. E-tools.
8. 400 sandbags.
9. Ladder.
10. 5 blanks per Marine.
11. 10 rolls concertina wire.
12. 4 wirecutters.
13. EPW tags.
14. 20 Flexcuffs for EPWs.

The following safety requirements are utilized for the Urban Confidence Course:

1. Individual Marine:

a. Helmet.
b. Flak jacket.
c. 782 gear.
d. T/O weapon with one flashlight taped on weapon per team.
e. Gloves.
f. Knee and elbow pads

2. Key personnel and safety vehicle placement:

a. 2 scout swimmers at lake.
b. All safety equipment placed at known position.
c. Safety vehicle in the city square with driver and corpsman.
d. Instructors at each building to serve as guides and range safety officers.
e. Corpsmen at:
1) Lake.
2) Courtyard between Buildings # 21, # 23, and # 27.,br> 3) On the west side of Building # 16.
4) At Building 11.
5) At Building 12.
6) At the sewer opening on the west side of Building # 10.

*If this number of corpsmen is not available, the Range Officer in Charge or Range Safety Officer will use their judgement in regards to corpsman placement.

A map of the Camp Lejeune MOUT Facility with building numbers and course layout will be inserted here as soon as it is available.
