"If it had been a popular war.....the battle for Hue would today still be a familiar name. More importantly, the men who survived to return home would have been greeted as heroes; those who had fallen would have been remembered."

Ken Nolan - Battle for Hue

Marine Expeditionary Units (MEUs) are forward deployed and are our country's immediate response, power projection force. As such, these Marine Air Ground Task Forces (MAGTFs), are often the first to arrive "on the scene" during urban contingency operations. West coast MEU's are based out of Camp Pendleton, California. East coast MEU's are based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The 31st MEU is based out of Okinawa, Japan. Visit "America's 911" force at the following sites:

11th MEU (West Coast), 13th MEU (West Coast), 15th MEU (West Coast), 22nd MEU (East Coast), 24th MEU (East Coast), 26th MEU (East Coast), and 31st MEU (Okinawa, Japan).

Or visit a non-official MEU (SOC) Homepage.

Another Marine unit that must be prepared to operate in urban areas is the Chemical Biological Incident Response Force (CBIRF). (*Link currently down) CBIRF is tasked with developing the concepts, doctrine, organization, techniques, and procedures for responding to chemical or biological incidents. CBIRF focuses this effort by developing countermeasures and force-protection training and equipment support for deploying MEUs. CBIRF also assists federal, state, and local response forces in developing their own training programs on how to manage the consequences of a chemical or biological incident.
